Depends on what size LCD you're looking at. Probably most people either run a 17-19" 1280x1024 LCD, or a 20" 1600x1200 (or 20" widescreen 1680x1050) one these days. Higher resolution screens (23-24"+ LCD's) are fairly common, but still not really widespread.

Keep in mind the average gaming resolution on these forums will be higher than the average of all gamers. Something that will give you a little insight is the Valve hardware survey. According to that, 1024x768 is still the most common gaming resolution, with 1280x960(1024) coming in a close second.

This may not be the final say, but it makes sense to me when you consider the fact that low and mid range cards are what sell in massive volumes, and those cards are going to be lucky to be pushing those kinds of resolutions in modern games with respectable detail.

I run everything at 1280x1024 on my LCD. I'm looking at a monitor upgrade sometime this summer to a Dell 24" at which point I will start looking at a videocard upgrade too.

22" CRT and I play at 1280x1024 mostly, sometimes 1600x1200.

I'd say the average worldwide is 1024x768, probably with 1280x1024 after that.

Well I am looking towards a 19" or 20" LCD. I will be running an AMD 4400+ with an eVGA 7800GTX 512MB Superclocked. So I know I can run a high resolution, but I also know that a LCD can run up a nice big bill real quick. So I am not looking for the best of the best, but I want to be able to run in a nice resolution.

Your probably looking at 1280x1024 unless you go widescreen then it would be 1680x1050 for 19/20" display. The system specs you listed will run that no problem at all.

1024x768, I bet. I suppose 1280x1024 is becoming the new standard, though, specially because most 17"-19"LCDs have that resolution as native.

I game at 1280x1024, which my LCD's native resolution. My rig probably wouldn't be able to handle anything higher.

1600x1200 and widescreen resolutions like 1920x1440 or 1920x1080 are the 'enthusiast's' , 20.1", X2 4400+/FX-60, SLI'ed 7900GTXs resolution, and a minority.

I only have an o/c'ed 6800GT, so I only game in 1024x768 or 1280x1024 in newer games(quake4, cod2, fear).

Right now I have some Dell (not sure on model #) 17" and it is 1024x768. I am really looking for an upgrade to that...I have a feeling I will be spending a lot of time on the net trying to find some deals. Oh what fun.

If you want to upgrade to 20" 1680x1050 widescreen goodness, there's a BenQ model on sale for $299AR at Newegg.
It has DVI too.

For LCDs, you pretty much don't have a choice for the resolution. The most common for LCDs would be 1280x1024 - which is any standard 17-19" LCD (although wide screen 19"ers have popped up recently, giving you 1440x900).

However, 19" wide screens might been too late onto the scene to be or even become the common resolution there, it'd be the 20" widescreens @ 1680x1050

(4:3 ratio)
14-15" = 1024x768 (although these monitors seem to have made the endagered species list)
20-21.3" = 1600x1200

(5:4 ratio)
17-19" = 1280x1024 (easily the most common for gamers with LCD)

(16:10 ratio - widescreen)
19" = 1440x900
20-20.1" = 1680x1050 (probably most common for widescreen)
23-24" = 1920x1200 (I think Dell is about to add a 27" model that would support this same resolution, for blind people I guess)
30" = 2560x1600

In the past, there were games that supported only 4:3 ratio resolutions,; now, just about all games offer a 1280x1024 resolution (most likely thanks to LCDs - some games even show 1280x1024 as an option and label "LCD" next to it). Wide screen LCDs are also the cause for games to finally support wider resolutions without a mere cropping.

Do you think it would be a bad investment for a 20.1" widescreen? I don't know that much about the widescreen, so if I am not going to be able to reap the benefits of a widescreen, then I'll keep looking. What do you think?

If your going to go into an LCD that uses 1680 res IMHO you might as well get a 21" over a 20" this allows more real estate at the same res. The drawback is higher costs for the bigger screens. I feel WS is the way to go since more games are supporting it and alot of olders games either apply patches or can be fixed to run using WS format. Once you go WS you never go back. ;)
