What is the ATI equivalent of an Nvidia 6800 GT PCI-Express?

Not too thrilled with the latest nvidia drivers, being that they're not terribly friendly with some older games (choppy as hell mouse movement in Morrowind, not very good AA support in all others).

Got the 6800 GT for free, so wouldn't mind actually paying for equally strong ATI card? Any suggestions?

Get the x800xl from newegg for 300 bucks, many models to choose, equal performance..... You will never notice a differance. x800XT is to hard to find, or they where.

Sure . . . fix your system ;)

Try other drivers.

Agreed, not sure what your issues are. I play Morrowind just fine along with every other game I am currently playing (KOTOR, KOTOR 2, UT 2004, CS S, and BF1942) For reference I use the XG 71.84 drivers.

Just fix your system. Its not worth plunking down $300 for a card thats already performance-wise on par with what you have. If drivers are giving you trouble, instead of giving up, and buying something different, then JUST TRY NEW DRIVERS. For the record, I have only had 1 problem with the 71.84 drivers, and thats with the original AVP. I am going to see what others have to say about that in a moment...

I would keep the 6800gt. But, you might be able to make a little bit of money buy buying an x800xl. Also, oem x800xt's often go for around 400 dollars.

X800 XL -- slightly faster than a 6800GT.
X800 XT -- the people that I?ve read on the forums that have made the jump from a GT to an XT say it?s a big jump in performance.

The X800XL is not faster than 6800GT. It is slightly slower, albeit $50-100 cheaper, which makes it a better price/performance card.

xl is usually slightly(1%) faster in more than 50% of games(espically those with half or life in the title. nvidia is faster in games with doom in the title.

Outside of Halo, Doom3 (NV worked closely with developer) and a few old OGL games, I?d say the XL800 is going to be generally a little faster in DX (90%+ of games) and the GT in OGL. This seems to bear out in those computerbase.de results Russian linked to. The XL was faster in (Farcry, UT4, TR-AOD, HL2) and the GT in (Doom3, RTCW).

3Dmark5

X800 XL ? 4753
6800GT ? 4603

3Dmark5 used DST (depth stencil textures) for the shadows on the GT which boosts its score ~ 10%. DST isn?t even in the DX spec. (it?s arguable whether Futuremark may have wanted appease NV) but they contested that quite a few of the big name developers would be supporting DST. The vast majority of games currently don?t support DST and how much future games will is up in the air.

3Damrk5 supports PP. (which probably boosts the GT?s score somewhat). I suspect that a lot of new games will follow HL2 and not bother with PP and use DX8 for thew FX series. PP can help the new NV4x?s but they don?t really need it and PP does nothing for ATI cards.

morrowind performs bad on any setup...it's a terribly coded game, it is not your problem

and there is no equivalent. none of the ATI card support Shader model 3.0....period...

Tomb raider isnt a game. Its a POS.

3dmark '05 is artificial, and not based on any real game engines like '01 was.

The X800XL doesnt support all the features of far cry.

There is no equivalent card from ATI.
No ATI card has SLI capability or DX9C support.

So you can get one with equal performance, but not equal hardware features.

oh god. dont you read the news? ati's sli(AMR) is supported by al r3xx and up chips.
when it comes out, you could possibly sli cards as low as 2x 9600pros.
dx9c isnt that important, are you telling me, you would pay $100 more to run dx9c and sm3? the 800xl is faster than the 6800gt in dx9 and is $100 less! the x850xt is faster than the 6800ultra and is comparable(sometimes a little less) in price.NO gmae requires sli to run smoothly right now, so it dosent matter who has it now, only who has it when it's needed. in a few mnoths when dualie x850s are put in AMR mode, it'll blow the 6800u sli setup scores out of the water. besides, dx9c isnt that much a improvement over dx9b. theres no incentive ot use the new "features in dx9c or ps3.0 cause you'll hardly be able to tell the difference.

i recently went for the 6800gt pci-e (couldnt wait any longer for x800xl, 2 months ago), i think both cards will do the job just fine. i play hl2, cs:s, farcry doom3 and plenty of others. all run fine on 2x AS and 4xAA (might be reversed sorry) at 1200x1080 and frames rarely drop below 75. i dont think you will notice any difference in game with either card, yes the ati may get better benches and the nvidia may be more futurproof, but i think both cards will serve your purposes for a good while. i say if you have a free card, just go with that. each company is going to keep beating the other on some feature or performance and you can never keep up. i dont think you will be dissappointed with the 6800gt

1. The "supported" cards have to be pci express.
2. If it was already "supported" then why isnt it out?
3. Far cry with HDR requires SLI to run smoothly
4. There are games coming out with no SM2.0b paths, so its PS3.0 or PS1.1.
