I read what BEHardware ha to say.....
I wouldn`t put to much stick in any reviews that places the ASUS ICE STAR as #1.......

Then if you read the conclusion they say thermalright XP90....

Yet we all know that the Scythe Ninja as well as the SI 120 and possibly the Big Typhoon or the Zalman 9500 are all as good or better than....

First time I ever heard of BEHardware-- last time I want to hear of them!!

Anybody can get 15 different Heat sinks and manipulate the results...

I would stick with the reputable reviewers...

Have a nice day!!

The Thermalright heatsinks don't even come with fans, so how is that comparing stock?

Good point!! dude!!

As I stated who is BEhardware.....
also again its easy to not have a clue what you are reviewing....lolol

Um actually you can. The fan retaining clips support 120mm. There's no need to bother with mods . . .

Also even if the StarIce is marginally better than the XP90C with the fans chosen by that review (Which I am beginning to question since the XP90C has broken many records when it comes to best air cooling), I would still opt for the XP90C since it isn't quite as ear-shattering . . .

Actually BeHardware is a pretty objective sight, no BS. Many hardware sites will just post BS temp #;s without citing idle, room temp, etc. Even many people here will claim their XP120 works better than a Typhoon, or vice versa, but hey that's their experience. I was glad someone was ambitious enough to test multiple HSFs (actually 25) in a single review with good objective data (which I support since I've had the Hyper48, Hyper 6, and now XP90C)!

Anyhow, YMMV...good luck..

And as a fellow XP90C owner I would agree with you entirely. My arguement is not that the Star Ice is better than everyone overall, it is that it one helluva hsf, due to its astronimically high CFM (and noisy) fan.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that the XP90C retaining clips could support a 120mm. Now if i could just make it fit in an HTPC case =/

Actually I wouldn`t even place the ASUS Star ice in my top 5 list of heatsinks....

In fact I would have to rate the Scythe Ninja as #1.....based on reviews as well as personnal comments by people who own the Ninja!!
In fact I believ it was SPCR that said concerning the Ninja....fore pure 100% numbers the Scythe Ninja wins out.
Mind you that in the same review were the XP120 as well as the Big Typhoon...

My #2 would be the New SI 120.....
followed closely by the XP90 copper with the Big Typhoon and the XP120 and the Zalman 9500 all tied for 3rd....
The main reason the Typhoon was listed in there was because of all the people who own the Typhoon.. I have seen alot of complaints about not getting the desired temps....such as the drop you get from going from stock heatsink to one of the above.

Plus I have listed the Zalman 9500 becuase I own onw and I have tested it along with the XP 120 and they both are almost identical in temps regardless of fan rpm.....yet the zalman has the edge...
Thast pretty good considering the fan on the zalman probably is 92mm X25mm....

Possibly the ASUS Star ice would fit in here...all the reviews I have read say its a good quality top notch heatsink....yet I also read in several reviews you need to remove the motherboard to install it....

Then I personally would add the Scythe Shogun as well as Arctic Cooling Freezer fans...
Then we could go any number of ways....the field is really packed with some quality Heat sinks!!

Thermaltake Sonic Tower. For those who like links to reviews, here are a few:
Text
Text2
Text3
Text4
Text5 <-- Fanless

It's a huge heatsink, and it cools very well. Some reviewers don't get good results with it when compared to others, but they also don't use a fan on it (link #5).

Like I said there are many other real good heatsinks out there after what I listed as IMO the top 5 or so...I would definately consider that one...its unique to say the least...imagine if it was all copper...lolol

What is the absolute best air cooler?
If price weren't an option, what is the most powerful air cooler?

Well, the absolute best air cooling solution is the vapochill, period. But of course it cost as much as an FX 57.

He's right! Technically, it IS still an air cooler, since the condensor is cooled by air ;)

Umm actually no.....most compressors are air cooled......not in the samew league as true Air Cooling.....
Air is NOT cooling the Chip...thus.......lolol

In that case, no modern CPU is aircooled, because air isn't directly cooling the chip... A heatsink gets in the way ;)
Edit: Pic of a CONDENSOR being cooled by a fan: AC Diagram. Although it's a pic of an AC, the VapoChill units are basically small fridges/ACs themselves. The compressor is actually cooled by radiation/convection.

You're basing your decision on one review? If you check other reviews and what people are using and their results, the TT Big Typhoon has a slight lead over the other HSFs mentioned in this thread.

It's not exactly the smartest design though (i.e. HUGE + heavy; which is why I opted for XP90C over it) . . . ;)

yes you could be correct.
Yet I have also seen alot of negative things concerning the TT Big Typhoon.....such as my temps didn`t drop like they should have and I had to remove the mobo to install the Big Typhoon etc.....

Again as I will always say--
Therer are so many variables with each different PC that go into installing aheat sink you really cannot say which heatsink is the best....

For example--take the Zalman 9500 all I have heard about the 9500 is totally good from people on this forum as well as other forums who are using the 9500 yet reviews are mixed....
Same as with the TT almost all reviews give it very high marks...
Yet the individual uswers complain alot more than they praise the Big Typhoon....

Thus it truly is a matter of what works best in your particular PC!!
:)
