If you want a technical answer just PM BonzaiDuck. My vote sides w/ GY. SI/XP 120.

XP90C should beat XP120 if you use same fans . . . so if you want the absolute best it would probably be the XP90C but remember though the coolers with the best heat dissipation aren't necessarily the best coolers for your particular CPU . . . i.e. the XP90 may be wonders for your prescott but won't necessarily beat the Big Typhoon on socket 939 . . .

Big Typhoon, Scythe Ninja, zalman 9500, themalright si-120 are all about the same. Big typhoon would win by a hair, though it puts a lot of stress on the mobo with all that torque. Best be gentle when using it.

I think this was posted before with alot of replys. Search for it and you might find it. Zalman 9500 or XP/SI 120 get my vote.

I personally would take iether the SI 120 or the Zalman 9500!!

Not sure what the fascination around here is with these CPU coolers that look like giant landscape blocks with a fan on top...

My vote goes to the Swiftech MCX6400-V. "Best" is a relative term and highly subjective depending on what you're looking for.

I wouldn't get the Typhoon because of its sheer size . . . I remember the days when I used a TT Tower112 Pure Cu heatsink and it weighed like one and half pounds without any fans . . . and over two pounds with two fans attached . . . the thing towered over my mobo . . . then I got my XP90C . . . nuff said . . .

Sorry you're all wrong. Best available right now as we speak, in *stock* form:

Asus Star Ice

It's heatpipe design with the highest flowing CFM fan outmuscles all others (Typhoon, SI120,XP90c,etc.). Of course, the penalty for this is bloody ears, as it is also the noisiest (68dB!!!!!).

The most dramatic cooler I have ever used was a Swiftech on the Socket A. It was coupled with an 80mm Delta focused flow fan. It was very loud and very effective.

My current cooler a Zalman 7700Cu is pretty darn good though. And very quiet.

Well that test didn't use a high speed 120mm Delta fan on the XP-90C nor on the Big Typhoon in which case I believe both would have edged out the StarIce. Also this is only for a prescott, as I've said before, the best heat dissipation doesn't make a cooler the best one for a particular socket type. The fact that the StarIce must use such a loud and high speed fan shows that it is obviously NOT the best cooling solution as all you would have to do is mount a higher CFM fan on say the XP-90C or Big Typhoon and in then the StarIce would probably fall behind.

Also don't base everything arond just one test. The XP-90C for instance has been proven time and time again of its cooling prowess . . . And the Big Typhoon has also proven itself to be the best cooler yet for K8 . . .

Correct, but you cannot use a 120mm on XP90C without modifications. Again the question was whats the best he can get now for air, period. The answer in *STOCK* form is the Asus, regardless of what noise it is. If this was a question of which is the best in terms of cooling, sound, installation, etc. sure I would vote for the XP90C (*applaud*), C9500, SI120, or Typhoon myself. Hence, even the article written awarded the victor to some other than the Asus Star Ice.

Maybe the OP wanted to know which is the best HSF combo with most efficient C/W given the same airflow? If so, then we can deliberate all we want! :p

Apparently, you didn't read the whole article and looked only at the *subjective* winner.

Asus Star Ice:

"The leader in the classification isn?t surprising. Heat pipe products take first place. Except for the star Ice (the exception), the best ones feature coolers with wide fans. Star Ice?s first place, despite its modest 80-mm fan, is due to the high rotation speed that leads to high performances and airflow (but also to a very high noise level)."

"With this cooler, appearances are just what they seem to be? The fan is extremely noisy: the noisiest of all the models tested here. However, its performances are also very high. Combining the 6 heatpipes with this high airflow rate fan makes of the Star Ice the best cooler in terms of raw performances with a delta Air-IHS ratio of only 19.4°C in full load (o/c). This fan is for performance enthusiasts only, even if it is to the detriment of the noise level."
