Looks like we get two gems today, one each from Giz and Endgadget.

The first is that there will be no/no copy paste in windows 7 phones.

I find both of these decisions very interesting, and a little odd, given the flak that the iphone got for the lack of copy/paste and the emphasis droid's marketing team put on multitasking.

The thing is you have to take into account the fact that there's still almost 7-9 months till the OS is released at all. They said they're going to be working on incorporating some kind of copy/pasting into the OS, and they might change their mind on multitasking as soon as iPhone get's a new OS update.

Yeah anything can happen between now and launch, I'm not ruling out Windows Phone 7 Series. It's reasonably likely they will implement copy/paste and multitasking by the time it launches or sometime after it launches.

True, but it doesn't sound like they just don't have time to add it, but rather as one of the MS developers says:

"We don't enable copy and paste and we do that very intentionally," Windows Phone executive Todd Brix said in an interview.

Brix said many times when a user copies something on a phone, what they really are looking to do is take a specific action, such as calling a phone number or e-mailing an address. For those specific tasks, Microsoft has what it calls "smart linking," which lets a user double click on a phone number and either call it or add it to the phone book. For an address, one can get a map without having to copy and paste the address.

"It's actually an intentional design decision," he said. "We try to anticipate what the user wants so copy and paste isn't necessary."

im pretty sure incapable of and not necessary mean different things... can you click a phone number or address and call/ get a map from it on your iphone? if its done well, i can see the need for cut/copy/paste being dramatically lower (not completely unnecessary), and will still wait to make a judgment on the wp7. im still intrigued. also, the zuneHD is much more fun to play with than the itouch so far, i have access to both and use them often.

Microsoft is saying out loud what Apple didn't 2-3 years ago. That if you plan ahead, you can implement an interface that doesn't need copy&paste everywhere, because you have anticipated that if a user clicks a phone number that they are going to want to make a phone call.

When they did implement copy&paste it was done with a great deal of polish and works really well. I don't mind the idea that Microsoft won't have it in their initial release (if that happens), so long as when they do have it, it is properly implemented. Whether they straight crib off of Apple, or put their own spin to it, if it isn't implemented well, there will be more people bitching about that than there were complaining about the lack of it.

The flip side is when the Apple/iPhone faithful go to great lengths to argue why no multitasking is actually a positive feature and not simply a limitation or shortcoming of the iPhone OS. We'll see if those same people complain that MS is out of touch or that WP7S will bomb.

With Apple, every shortcoming is actually a benefit if you just believe strongly enough.

Of course, I think it's stupid that MS would try to emulate Apple in this particular way, as if the iPhone's success is due to a conscious removal of certain features and not Apple's soaring popularity among bandwagoners.

the multitasking of WM7 seems to kill iPhone at least. Saved states are a little better than nothing at all. Theo nly thing that saves state in the iPhone is your browser... maybe a few other apps.

I hadn't really been following WP7S, but after reading the AT article, I'm very intrigued.

Honestly, the Zune, Zune software and Zune pass are fucking awesome. If the phone works half as well and seamlessly, and can integrate well with the shit I need (gmail, gmail contacts, google calendar), then it'll be a serious contender for my next phone upgrade.

I think my next upgrade with Sprint is in December, so there just might be alot of interesting stuff to consider. The EVO 4G looks awesome, hopefully there'll be new WebOS hardware, hopefully a WP7S option...good stuff all around, IMO.
