I saw a mention of it on an edmunds car review, but don't know what it is? I have had some experience with a standard transmission, but not very much. Also are there any good sites that attempt to explain driving a manual tranny?

Speed shifting is flooring the gas, throwing the clutch to the floor (without letting up on the gas), moving the shifter to the next gear in order, and letting up off the clutch.

i think speed shifting is not using the clutch at all

ahh yes, this is how theives where i live steal cars with alarms/foot pedals/steering column locks steal cars around here lol. they speed shift it at certain rpms and it works.

Speed Shifting:
1. gently roll off the throttle (releasing gear tension)
2. as you do this quickly shift into the next gear
3. then smoothly accelerate

All this is done without pressing in the clutch at all.

no, that's power shifting, Speed shifting is shifting without the clutch, but you have to do it at a certain RPM for it to work.

Not really, the trick is to left off the gas just enough to release the pressure on the gears.

Try this; while driving down the road mash the gas, then release the gas, there is a soft spot between accelerating and decelerating, that's where you have to speed-shift.

I've done that on a motorcycle before, but I didnt really let the throttle off gently. It was pretty easy, and you have to get it at a certain RPM or else it messes up the gears by putting too much wear on them. I think it was about 6500-7000 RPM's when I did it, but it all depends on the motor youve got. I didnt know it was possible in cars, my dad tried it and he just kept on grinding the gears:D On motorcycles its easy, and lots of fun......it gives a little kick when you shift:)

how can you call speed shifting not using the clutch? I takes time for the rpm's to fall low enough to bang the next gear. Power Shifting and speed shifting if you ask me are the same thing. Keep the throttle romped on the floor stomp the clutch and slam the next gear. All of this is done in a split second... But be careful if its in a car with any kind of power it will bust the drive tires loose... Most Semi truck drivers rarely use the clutch to shift because they have to double clutch it. There are no syncro's in the majority of trannys for big trucks s they have to mesh the gear speeds. Shifting without a clutch is the same thing you gotta wait for the gears to mess before they'll slip in. In a semi that is a lot faster. In a car with sync's i doubt there's much difference...

speed shifting = no clutching
power shifting = shifting with your foot to the floor on the gas the entire time (clutching, shifting)
