nothing, but that's the libertarian in me.

The libertarian in me does not object to taxes necessarily but does strongly object to playing with the tax system for effecting social change rather than using it as a neutral system for generating revenue for providing necessary government services.

I agree with you, but that does leave the question of what is defined as necessary... although not really relevant to NY.

I'm sure Maxine, Charlie, Chris, and Barney could tell us what is "necessary".

Pot.

Pot is already taxed in most states. When dealers are busted they are charged with intent to sell and they are asked if they have tax stamps for their pot. If not then they also get charged with tax crimes as well.

Pot.

Technically, it already is taxed...heavily by the Feds.

However, I agree with what I think you mean...legalized, regulated, taxed and controlled.
Sold and controlled like liquor.
The country could make HUGE dent in the deficit with such a plan...not to mention the large increase in the sales of snack foods. 😀

masturbation.

I don't think anyone here would be able to afford a computer then. 😉

perhaps not. but damn think of all the banks the goverment could bail out with all that tax money!

Wealth. Sure, there are some wealth taxes (property tax on your home or car for example). But for the most part, wealth is not taxed. I'd much rather see a wealth tax in place and the income tax and sales taxes lowered or eliminated.

that isn't taxed yet.

I mean, at least here in NY, they are coming up with taxes on everything imaginable, and I wonder what they'll tax next.

OMG, you live in NY? When and where should I meet up with you?

Sending your kids to public schools should be costly IMO.

There already are taxes for that, even if you don't have kids.

Exactly my issue. You should be taxed more if you send your kids to public schools.

umm why?

Because you get something for your school tax dollars. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind supporting the local schools. But seeing teachers get paid shit and the economy causing problems for many districts... Why don't these schools (or local government) turn to the people that actually use the schools?

Basically parents are getting free babysitting, life lessons, and exercise for their kids. I don't get jack.

Because YOU use the service...I don't have kids in public schools...Why am I obligated to pay for them?

(yeah, I know...just following the argument)

That's a fantastic idea. Then poor people won't be able to send their kids to school, so they'll get stuck in a cycle of unending poverty. We'll create a whole class of people who are more or less bred for menial jobs. Soon we'll have a large enough population of these people that we can stick them all in factories and reduce our reliance on Chinese manufacturing. We'll get the same terrible quality, but without the toxic filler materials.

Our country benefits from having an educated population. Public schools are not a waste of money.

Marijuana (assuming we could get it legalized first). I'm not a stoner but I imagine we could make quite a hefty sum from taxes in addition to emptying our jails.
