What is so morally wrong about a state lottery here in NC?

State legislature has shot it down TWICE! Yet we rack up a multi-billion dollar budget shortfall. All the while NC residents are flocking to SC and VA to buy lottery tickets. And in SC, part of the lottery money goes to let kids go to college for free if they keep a C or higher average (I think that's correct).

Idiots!

Probably becuase they don't want to have dumb poor people burn thier money on the lottery. Their too stupid for their own good.

Thats the only logic I can get out of it.

Functionally it takes money from poor people and gives it to the middle class.

Cause your politicians are owned by church groups who think that gambling is a sin. Same reason that you can't buy alcohol in most of Kentucky.

When we got a lottery in Illinois it was claimed to be the way to get out of our budget crunch. As usual all it did was give the politicians more money to squander.

We need to encourage people to save their money and work had to get it and NOT to spend it on a get-rich-quik scheme!

Tell that to the states that have lotteries!

I'm just getting sick of hearing about all of these tax increases, teacher layoffs, class cancellations, less school funding, poor roads/bridges, etc anf then the damn legislators sit up their and say NO to a lottery b/c "Jesus wouldn't like that. "

Gambling takes advantage of the poor and those whose don't understand mathematics (stupid) the most. Sure it's Voluntary but if your addicted it's hard.

So is getting addicted to alcohol and cigarettes. Don't see them being banned around here...especially cigarettes (being that we're the tobacco state). Self control should come into play at some point IMHO.

If they were introduced today knowing what we know now they would, however we grandfather them in now just like gasoline pumps.

Edit: I'm not saying I agree with drugs, tobacco, gas being illegal. But to me gambling is worse because it hit those who can't afford it the most, teaches them the wrong lessons about life, and can sometimes effect thier whole family financially,

It is a tax on poor people that are bad at math. And even if it is being sold as funding for education, chances are the lottery dollars go right into the general fund.

Exactly. Just last week at a local convenience store I was stuck for 10 minutes behind an obviously down-and-out guy while he selected 40 different lottery numbers, spending $80. I don't really want my state in the business of taking advantage of the stupid.

Running lottery is an example of government at its best--putting even more levy on its subjects. And it does that under the pretense of the good of the public.

You have budget shortfall, increase property tax. If that's not
enough, how about jacking up gas tax, sin tax. Still short, let's do
lottery.

Someday they will legalize mariyuana not because they change their mind about it, but just because they want tax revenue from its sale.

Q: Why is stealing a crime?
A: Because government hates competition!

That's the exact reason why we don't have one here in Alabama either. :|

You guys make it seem like only poor folks are the ones that play the lottery. I know many middle class families that play when they get a chance. My dad plays at least once a month (Virginia or South Carolina). It's not like he NEEDS the money.

What about church sponsored BINGO. Talk about churches being hyprocrites. That's another topic, I'll shut up. :)
