noticed the same thing regarding asians. I lived in LA until high schoolish and seattle since then. Where I grew up in LA it was pretty rare to be good friends with someone who isn't your race. I think it's because as a korean living in socal it's pretty easy to build a network of friends comprising of only koreans, and the fact that there are already existing segregated groups in LA makes it easier to be a part of them.

Up here the segregation isn't so bad. Although lynnhood with it's large population of koreans is starting to become a bit cliqueish.

Also the "seattle freeze", as illustrated by this case:

1) Walking down a hallway, see someone you think you recognize about 30 feet away
2) 20 feet away. you make eye contact, recognize the person
3) 10 feet til physical contact! Initiate smile sequence!
4) 5 feet away. Eye contact has been disengaged by the target. WTF? Did he not recognize me? Is he busy? Why is he ignoring me?

That's one thing I miss about the midwest. Every time I get on a flight to/from the midwest/Seattle, if the person next to me strikes up a friendly conversation, I know they're from the midwest.
