What is sad about this Dilbert Comic strip is it is True.

Minus the firing part, I have twice been one of those competent people in the 13 months at my current job, both times under the same Dogbert protege.

Heheh... It is very true. In the workplace, or any college project where you are forced to work in groups... :)

Just to show things don't change, I have a retired friend (was a top-level exec for 30 years at a big company) who called me last Sunday to ask if I had read Dilbert. He said, "That is the best Dilbert of all time." True today, was true back then.

From The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene:

Law 7 of 48:
Get others to do the Work for you, but Always Take the Credit

Use the wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of other people to further your own cause. Not only will such assistance save you valuable time and energy, it will give you a godlike aura of efficiency and speed. In the end your helpers will be forgotten and you will be remembered. Never do yourself what others can do for you.

You seem to be pretty successful. Are you telling us you're incompetent?

Had this happen at my first job. Dude was hired as a programmer and could barely even type much less read COBOL. People were doing his work for him all the time and he started taking credit for my work as well.

Fortunately, enough people complained (including me) that he was gone in the first round of lay-offs in the company. I thought he should have been fired outright but you had to do something really ridiculous to get fired at that company.

well, for the most part, we call these incompetent people "managers".

People are always promoted to a level of incompetence.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

But in all seriousness office politics and getting ahead is all just one big game. Just have to use this and play it right.

Yep, there's no avoiding it -- unless you don't want to move up the corporate ladder.
