what is raid?

what is the point of using 2 hard drives hooked up w/ a raid system (e.g. kt7 raid)? Is it faster than using just 1 hard drive? i am considering getting 2 IBM deskstar 75gxp 15gb ata/100 hard drives, but was wondering the advantages over just getting a 30 gig version, b/c i would save money. how does this "raid" work?
if you don't feel like responding, just let me know of a link which does tell me. i can't find where.

would it be faster to run 2 ibm deskstar ata100 15Gb's, or run 4 smaller drives (not as fast as the ibms)? oh yea, run them w/ raid !

RAID is the chemical that you use to kill bugs in your house. J/K 😛 I had a RAID setup before using 2 IBM Deskstar ata100 15GB's, but I didn't really notice the speed difference that much. So I sold it.
