what is Raid

1) Go to "search" option in upper right corner.

2) Type "RAID" into search terms box.

3) Hit "Search".

4) Come back after you've at least *tried* to figure out what it is.

look im a novice.so if u want to help ..help ..but if u going to help and give me some uncalled for attitude..dont bother replying..and take your ish to another thread

thanks in advance

Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers.
There are number of different RAID levels. The three most common are 0, 3, and 5:

Level 0: Provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disks) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance.
Level 1: Provides disk mirroring.
Level 3: Same as Level 0, but also reserves one dedicated disk for error correction data. It provides good performance and some level of fault tolerance.
Level 5: Provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance.

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (although some claim it is Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

RAID is the clever use of multiple hard drives for the purpose of protection of data and/or increasing speed.

For an explanation of the different implementations of RAID, please read the AnandTech FAQ: What are the different RAID levels and what do they do?

Um, I agree. At least try to find out what it is. Finding out what RAID is would have taken you about 60 seconds going this route.

It's not really an 'uncalled for attitude' when Google works wonders.

If it's because you're new to the web and don't understand what a search engine is, that is cool, people just automatically assume that when you post to a forum, you know how to use the internet search tools.

Learning to use the search box is a courteous thing to do. Actually using it is even more friendly!

Seriously, now that you know it exists, why not use it from now on? You'll find all kinds of helpful answers and opinions on RAID-0, RAID-1, hard drive brands, intel vs. AMD vs. Mac, 512 vs. 1 GB of RAM, and many other common questions.

why the stank attitude from people up on this board..

i have cheeked what raid is..
people have told me what raid is
but i wante a fresh perspective, cause u hear different things from different people
reading an article..is some times not as helpful as reading views from people who have actually used it
please if u dont dont feel like helping..please dont reply

Are you going to use raid in your pc, Iamnr?

I used it in mine without knowing what it is until I opened the motherboard box. The cables are much smaller and easier to manage in the case. It was more expensive, but the extra performance and reliability made it worth it.

I dont tell people to search and nothing else. New threads on old subjects give new users the chance to voice their opinions without digging up old threads.

Oops, hitting enter sent my post in, here's the rest of what I wanted to say.

llmar, How can you get different views on what RAID is? It's a simple concept. You could get opinions on which RAID type to use, and this is exactly what the search would yield you. It would send you to old thread about the exact same thing that you posted, only you don't need to wait for a response! RAID hasn't fundamentally changed in 20 years.

u just dont get it do u....

there are polite and impolite ways of telling people..things
if this was a real word situation i still would be offended
cause if he was standing infront of me he would have not put it in that way unless he is a natural rude person

now if he had said..if u use the search function some topics on RAID will come up ..i would have not being offended..instead he decided to be cheeky..cause he can hide behind a computer screen.....

like i said before if u have nothing constructive to add to a thread ..or u feel the thread has no point..just dont reply

It's about netiquette.
You asked something which is extremely easy to find yourself, either by using your favorite search engine, or by just using the forum search function.
By most people's definition of nettiquette that's rude to begin with.

tell me does posting that message lessen the quality of your life in any way

im guessing the answer is no...

so if u find the question uninspiring ..like i said before just dont reply

thanxs for understanding

Iamnr

gotta agree with you. computer screens make a lot of self righteous and super-smart people.
and from your low post count, all I can say is welcome to anandtech.
