Then you my boy need some Pomade.

hmm. but my hair isn't unruly per se... it just poofs out sometimes and i'd like it to look more normal. maybe it's because i don't use conditioner normally...

Try the Firm Gel. It works pretty good.

I use pomade. Gives you all the benefits of gel, but keeps your hair soft and re-styleable. Also helps you to avoid the possibilty of poking someone's eye out with your spikey hair.

I use the American Crew Firm Gel and I've tried the Pomade (I think it was that). Its like a heavy duty wax you put in your hair. I didn't like it at all. The firm gel gives a good hold that lasts most of the day without making the hair feel heavy.

Pomade is usually very waxy and greasy; it used to be made of goose fat IIRC.
It's best if you want shine and high control, but it's hard to get out and not very pleasant feeling.

Molding cremes, e.g. American Crew Fiber, have the holding power of gel but keep the hair smooth and soft, and don't make the hair shiny.

My personal favorite is Bumble & Bumble's "SumoTech." It's very expensive but it holds great and gives my hair a nice texture. Smells wonderful, too. :)

American Crew pomade is actually very easy to get out and not very greasy at all.

I use pomade and I think it's better than styling gel. It's not greasy unless you use too much (a little goes a long way).

Yeah, they've all told you what it is....but if you're looking for something that'll keep your hair in one place and "hard", then you'll want a gel, like AC's Firm Hold gel. I love AC all around (although their shampoo doesn't work too well in my hair), but their gel is one of the best out there. Smells nice, styles easily, stays hard, but no residue when you take it out, and most importantly to me, no flakes afterwards. (Other gels might work better, with less of the stuff, but flaky as hell)

There are lots of pomades/waxes if you want to try them........one company you should try (hair gel too), is Fudge.
