What is Pho?

For lunch, the co-workers and I went to a restaurant that makes burritos, yet is owned by some Vietnamese folks. Go figure -- it's good food.

Anyway, the restaurant just barely started to offer Pho to the customers. I was tempted to get it, but I didn't know "what the Pho" Pho was. Somebody care to explain?

Its a vietnamese noodle soup with lots of white rice noodles. Typically pho is made with a beef broth (can be also chicken or seafood) and has meat in it. Seasoned with cilantro, scallion, onion, and other spices. The broth is very flavorful and you get a big bowl so its meant to be eaten as a meal.

There are several good places here in Atlanta as well. I had a Vietnamese buddy of mine point me to the best ones (in his opinion).

Care to share? Obviously I could just about take my pick of the litter on Buford Hwy but I never have any idea which are good. Guide me

Pho is thin rice noodles with partially uncooked beef, tripe, some tendons, or beef balls. Usually mixed with spicy sause to make it very delicious.

It's pretty cheap, $4-6 here can make you full. Very delicious.. I want some Pho now. It's also a Viet food.

Meh. I typed pho faq into google and didn't come across the same links you did. I should have just stuck with Pho.

Chronoshock: Thanks for the info. I guess one of my coworkers DID get it then, like I supposed. She thought it was just soup, but it didn't look like the soup I normally have; it had way too many noodles. It didn't smell all that great, however, so I was reluctant to get it.

The smell was probably the fish oil they sometimes add. Vietnamese dishes often use fish oil/fish sauce to flavor it giving it an...interesting aroma

absolute goodness. i miss pho so much sometimes.

it can be salty and i usually leave with that "pho" smell all over my clothes but i still love eating it. i usually get just well done meat, as i don't like rare meat in my broth.

In that area where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Vietnamese restaurant or grocery? Talk about market saturation.

/eagerly awaits dead cat/Vietnamese restaurant joke

Beef/chicken broth is the base for "pho", and "bun/hu tieu" base often is seafood.

Pho is the comon lunch for Vietnamese which originated from North Vietnam, and it has been modified for the South Viet taste

Vietnamese noodles:

Pho is the common breakfast/lunch for Vietnamese which originated from North Vietnam, and it has been modified for the South Viet taste after the 1954 south migration.

Hu Tieu is the South breakfast/lunch which originated from Southern China, and has been modify to the Viet taste/herb. However, it isn?t as common food today because Pho has taken over.

Bun, such as ?bun nam vang? or ?bun bo hue? is another dish that came from central/South Vietnamese...isn?t as common as ?pho?, but they are awesome specially if you can stomach spicy food.
