I am watching the House on Cspan they are debating the new spending bill for Iraq Etc,
The Republicans are repeatedly saying we need to finish the mission.
what is this mission they speak of and how do they think we can complete it?
Are we going to stay there till the civil war ends or they all finaly kill each other off?
I just don't get it

Our missions is to get the govt stable and self sufficient. Whether or not that is possible is still up for debate.

The current mission entails keeping our troops in Iraq until we have a D in the Whitehouse. Then the R's can blame them for everything that goes wrong once we leave.

That's the ony "exit" strategy I can see coming out of the GOP??

Our mission was to liberate Iraq from Saddam. Now because it caused complete chaos, the mission is to restore peace.

I just don't think we have what it takes to do that.
we are doomed if we decide to stay the course just as we were in Nam.
why do we get ourselves involved in these messes? You would think we would learn.

Our mission is to totally disable the Sadam govt as we already had (kind of) and put in a weak inefficient easlily curruptable pseudo govt. That as soon as we leave (considering Bush's term left and the fact that the dems have both house and senate). This crap govt colapses and returns back to the sadam oriented govt. Where the head is one of Sadams relatives.

To create a stable democratic government that will be an ally in the war against terror.

The grand idea we started with involved creating a government that would act as an example to all the dictatorships in the area and to try and loosen the hold the dictators have on power in the middle east.
Imagine how much better the world would be with democratic governments running the middle east instead of a few crazy dictators bent on personal power.

I think now we will settle for a working peaceful democracy.

It sucks that we are in this situation. We should probably stop acting as peacekeeper of the world. Most of the world hates us and we are going into debt because of it.

Don't see whats wrong with what he is saying, I mean, in theory it would be a lot better. The problem is getting there, the plan was just flawed.

*sigh* Why is everything politicized now? We're in Iraq! ZOMG It's the Republicans' fault!!! Remember that a good number of Democrats were stolidly behind Bush when he was making all of his speeches to the UN and what not.

The views on our "mission" in Iraq are divided between overconfident Conservatives and defeatist Liberals, with only a few moderate voices saying anything useful. Honestly, our mission IMO is to, as ProfJohn said, create a stable democratic government that can survive on it's own and then leave.

But NO. BUSH LIED TO US!!! PULL OUT NOW!!! Maybe Bush overstated the facts, but remember the fact that British Intelligence, Israeli Intelligence, and others confirmed our findings. Honestly, the only reason we didn't find WMD is because Bush was a dumba$$ and gave them a 48 hour notice. A guy I know in Army Intelligence says they suspect that most of what we would have found went to Syria in that time span.

In the meantime, we need to stop screaming that Democrats or Republicans are idiots and finish the job. Then we can leave all the quicker. Unfortunately there's an upcoming election, so let the Iraq smear campaigns begin.

Yep and with the clowns we have in charge of the White House I doubt they are capable of pulling it off. Well after the mess they made I doubt anybody will be capable of pulling it off.

Yes, we need to invade all non-democratic countries, topple the despots and install democracy everywhere and if the people of those countries aren't willing to fight for democracy we will send your sons and daughters over to do the fighting for them.

Exactly. In other words it's to clean up the mess we started.

They better damn well fixed what they broke. I'm not a democrat, nor a republican. I was never for the war in Iraq. I was never for the war on terror.
I was and still am for fixing the USA so that we're no longer the world wide assholes everyone loves to hate. When will people realize that the reason why we're attacked is because we're pigs?

Fix it, get out, and STAY out.

I hate this, it makes me hurt to say it. But we need to stay a bit longer, at least to try and fix it.

And yes, Republicans, you screwed it up. Democrats, you screwed it up. You both have no clue what you're doing, and if you keep failing this hard, the people should probably take you down and fix it themselves.

Watch your back, politicians.

I think the mission was to poke the hornet's nest that is the middle east with an even bigger stick then all the other sticks we've used before.

Mission accomplished! The hornets are fvcking pissed!

Topic Title: What is our mission?
Topic Summary: In Iraq
According to the President and former Secretary of State:
To rid Saddam and Iraq of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

They got rid of Saddam and there were no WMD's so that would be mission complete.

Gotta love what's on CNN.com right now:

President Bush denounces House Iraq vote as "political theater"

As he stands at the rostrum with sad looking veterans standing behind him.

Political theater indeed, what an f'ing clown.

They just happen to be standing behind him when they took the picture. Whats the big deal? *sarcasm* Everybody involved in politics is a thesbian, don't take it so personal and just enjoy the laughs.
