fire.

Before fire, man may have been strong, but fire is what made every other material technology possible, and even without language (which would have surely halted all further progress), virtually all animals fear a man with fire.

Animals can technically have all the sex they want as well and can even kick their young out at anytime without have Child Services on their behinds. :)

Higher level language. Not just the "I'm hungry" grunts/chirps of animals. But language that lets one person who learned something communicate this learning with the rest of the world. Then the rest of the world communicates their discoveries with you. Together you have the knowledge of the whole world at your disposal. Then we can build on this language and repeat the whole process. This knowledge doesn't die with the death of one member.

Animals, only have what they learned themselves and what they crudely copy from a small select group. And all that animal's knowledge dies with him/her forever forgotten.
