NetBIOS.

Short for Network Basic Input Output System, an application programming interface (API) that augments the DOS BIOS by adding special functions for local-area networks (LANs). Almost all LANs for PCs are based on the NetBIOS. Some LAN manufacturers have even extended it, adding additional network capabilities.
NetBIOS relies on a message format called Server Message Block (SMB).

that look likes an informative read, but i'm too lazy to read it all, heh. I'm using a cable modem and I'm wondering if it's neccessary to have that Netbios over TCP/IP enabled?

if you want to use microsoft networking like sharing printers and drives then yes you need it enabled if IP is the only protocol on the network card.

Yea, if you just have a cable modem and your the only on your netowork leave it disabled, it will probebley shield you from some hacking attacks, but if you ever need to talk to other pc's on a LAN, ie you add a second pc and a router or go to a frag fest at some LAN party, then you will need it or some thing like it.

I know very little about networks, but I find that if it is working for you, the less enabled the better off you are.

I find without Netbios enabled, response between mapped drives and regular exploring of files/partitions is faster.
Maybe other things at work, but it is my observation.
Especially when one chooses Auto settings which uses TCP/IP over Ntbios.
