Short version: You used to reach a title of Senior Member (was that the only reason, or did you also unlock some extra site functionality?) for getting to 100 posts. As a result, some people posted repeated nonsense messages just to up their count.

One person who did this had the username of Nef. A prominent member of the site shortly thereafter told someone else who did this to "stop Neffing". It caught on from there. This was back in 2000 or so.
