Nitemare you could be right, I mean, he still has a GF.

OR

For some reason he is sprialling downwards and it will end in him killing himself if there is no intervention.

Don't tell me, oh we were just joking, cause, I'll find it funny too when someone starts laughing at you when your down and out or dead.
It's horrifying how you expect a legit answer to this thread.

Let me sum up what's happening here...
Someone is asking a life or death question OVER THE INTERNET.

You go figure out the responses. Would you be happier if everyone said "I'm not a doctor seek professional help"?

Why shouldn't one be able to expect a legit answer to "What is my legal obligation for suicide prevention?" Maybe he doesn't know a lawyer and was curious if anyone who drops in here knows?

Read the Topic and you'll see that he isn't asking a life or death question.... So no your summary is wrong, he is asking a legal question, not, should I kill myself now, He's not even the guy who picked up the note.

Call his g/f, tell her, then call a family member of his and tell them (if possible), and call the cops.

If someone leaves you and ONLY you a note about their suicide intentions and you fail to even tell anybody about it, I'm sure you'd be able to be sued in court, somehow.

No legal obligation, but I'd STRONGLY recommend calling the suicide prevention hotline as a concerned third party. The counselors there will be able to give you instructions on what to do next.

Even if it isn't your legal obligation, it is your moral obligation to seek help for a suicidal person in some way. Last July my Uncle, whom I was close to, killed himself. I talked with him the night before he did it, and was in denial that he would do something. Against my better judgment, I let the family telling me "He'll be ok, he's just a little depressed" sooth me and mislead me into thinking he was going to be alright. The next day he slipped out while my aunt was taking a shower, my dad and I went searching for him after getting a call from my aunt saying he slipped out with his .357 handgun. After 2 or 3 hours of driving around we found him, but it was too late. The image of seeing my Uncle with a bullet hole in the side of his head still haunts me and will be burned into my memory for the rest of my life.

I'm not suprised at some of the immature responses to this thread but do realize that suicide is no joking matter. In hindsight there was alot of things I could have done to prevent my Uncle's death and believe me when I tell you that there's not a day that goes by that I don't kick myself for not doing more.

If you know someone who is talking of suicide or you suspect they may hurt themselves don't wait, take action. it is your responsibility.

Wrong. It is not their responsibility. Show us a law stating that it is.

Don't involve the GF, just call the suicide prevention hotline and find out what they recommend. Even if it is calling the police, he dumped it on you (the threat), so whether he is taking it seriously or just trying to get attention and make you feel like crap, nothing you do is going to be an overreaction.

Who cares what your legal responsibility is? Do you really not give a damn about someone's life? Call the damn cops, jeez.

wow some of you guys are really clueless.

a suicide note is typically left for ones to read AFTER THE PERSON COMMITS SUICIDE.

its a little too late to get this so-called person help since they already killed themself.

Wow, you really are clueless if you think people write notes AFTER THEY ARE DEAD.

notfred = idiot.

Is it really unfathomable that someone might find the note before the person kills themselves?

This is a perfectly plausable scenario.

To the OP - I would say that the legal obligation of your friend is probably nil but I think that your friend would probably have a hard time living with himself if he did nothing and the person did kill themselves. But I also agree with another poster that the cops aren?t the right solution because I'm sure getting arrested would suck even more. If he has a GF get in contact with her and his family and get him some help!

If he wanted to kill himself he would already be dead. All he is is an inconsiderate attention-whore lamer screaming for attention.

agreed. As a counselor, who had her daughter take her own life, once told me "suicide is the most selfish act one can partake"

Your uncle's selfish act has brought about an endless feeling of guilt for you. You did not ask for it, but you accepted it. I sympathize for you, I truly do, but I won't sympathize for your uncle.

woah, two sides to everything.

same at work, we got 2 guys who voted not to do anything, while the other two who had friends who killed themselve are arguing in anger with red face trying to convince my co-worker to do something about it.

- here's the note, TK is my co-worker, Todd is the depressed guy. all name changed

"Dear TK

I've reached my limit, please tell Steph that I love her, ( her number is xxx-xxxx). thank you and jenny(tk's wife) for your help in taking me in to your house in my time of need -Todd"

basically, TK lets this guy stay at his house for a short time to sort out his divorce. this guy's new GF Steph is also going thru her own divorce. at anyrate, TK wanted to start charging this guy rent, and fast foward to last weekend. TK got home finding this note and the guy is not around.

At anyrate, my co-worker is only interested in if there are "legal obligation" to help him out, he's not interested in "moral obligation" because everyone have their own version. my co-worker did call the social services. Todd is mid 40's, have 2 kids, the kids resent todd for his new girlfriend.

All is well now, my co-worker TK is going to do an intervention.

Hah, I'm going to relate the story of a friend.

Some asstard at school thought it'd be funny to call the cops anonymously from a payphone and mention that he wanted to kill himself and that he had guns. Lots of guns.

15 minutes later, the guy is getting out of the shower and his mom calls to him "The phone's for you."
"Who is it?" "Some guy from the police." "Uhhh." So he picks up the phone, and the following conversation ensues

"Hello?"
"This is Detective Soandso from the Thareville police department. How are you doing, son?"
"Uhhh just fine, I guess."
"Do you have any guns in the house?"
"Uhhhh no."
"Could you please step out the front door?"

He looks out his window and sees the entire street lined with cruisers. So he walks out the front door in his bathrobe to be surrounded by 30-some cops with their guns pointed at him. They cuff him and sit him in one of the cars.

He finds out later WTF was going on, and that there were 4 hero cops ready to bust open the back door and go in, plus a sniper in the house across the back alley.

Apparently it was a slow night, since about half the force turned up to deal with a suicidal kid.
