What is my bottleneck?

I have been happy with my system until i started playing ut2k4. I get usually in the 40 fps range or higher but with lots of action it drops to the teens which doesn't seem like it should be happening with my video card. I want to know if a new processor would be the best thing to get if I can only spend $100. Heres my system right now:

Athlon 2000
2x256 pc2700
radeon 9600xt
ecs l7s7a2 (most people havn't heard of it but it performs similarly to an nforce2 so don't tell me new mobo)

Right now I'm thinking a mobile 2400 barton would be best. If you agree could you please suggest a good cheap hsf/fan. If not what would be better for $100?

Thanks

It could BE the mobo you know................. I would reccomend a 2500+ Athlon XP Barton as an upgrade, that is $80 bucks, and would give you a nice bang for the buck. Here's a linky; AMD

I don't know how it could be i mean i have looked at benchmarks online and it seems almost the same as any nforce2 board. I don't see how a new mobo could boost me up out of the teens and low 20's to good fps.

The term bottleneck implies that one part of your system is holding the rest back. IE: GeForce 2 MX with an otherwise rockin' system.
Your system is well balanced and all of the parts are well suited for each other.
There is no "bottleneck."

Here's your board. Basically nice specs, but I prefer either an nForce or VIA chipset. Was your chip made before they locked it? If so, and your board allows it, you could try O/C'ing your current chip. Then, monitor your temps to see if you need added cooling. If that works, a new HS/F would be cheaper than anything else you could do.

Ok so let me ask you this then. If I was to buy a new nforce2 mobo, a mobile 2400 and oc it, and new pc3200 ram (which is the plan I'm now leaning towards), would my 9600xt (which is oc'd to 550/350 by the way) hold this system back?

I'm not sure what you mean.
If you get your system up to 3000+ (say) is your question "will a 9600XT perform as well in games as a 9800Pro?" then the answer is No, of course not. Of course, it will still run any game today better than it really needs to be run...
As will your current system.
Were I you, I would just honker down with what you've got (as I have) and wait.
Such an incremental speed increase (and creating an extra wide point in the bottle for no reason) is really not productive.

There will always be a bottleneck, your system is fine as it is, my advice earlier remains the same, a Barton 2500+ could give you a nice boost, keep in mind unreal 2k4 is HEAVILY cpu dependent.
