Howdy folks, I'm just going through my HDD clearing out some cobwebs and found a program called MSXML 4.0 in c:\program files and in my Add/Remove Programs as MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK. I'm always very careful about what I install on my system, so can someone please tell me what this is and how it got there? Thanks!

Extensible Markup Language.

You know html? That has defined tags, like <html> <a> etc, XML you can make your own.

MSXML is very likely to be Microsoft XML 4.0.Especially given the SP2 bit, which probably means service pack 2.

EDIT: Oh also, GOOGLE. ATOT is a good way of getting stuff googled without visiting the site, but sitll man, type in MSXML into google, it's explained in the second site description.

MSXML IS Microsoft XML parser etc

I did Google it, but when it said it was a Microsoft XML parser I had no idea what that meant. I'm still not really sure (what the heck is a parser?) but as long as it's legit and not some spyware or something nasty it's okay. Thanks for your help.

It's not spyware or anything nasty. Essentially XML is a format (most often text, though there is a binary representation) for structuring data. You need a parser to read the text and load the structure into memory.

It's a web design langage/way of coding.

It's safe and reletively small, so don't worry about it.
