Just reformatted my PC couple of days ago and every since I reinstalled windows XP i've been recieving unknown messages, they just pop up out of no where. I only have AIM running. I never got these messages before I formatted. Anyone know what they are or how to get rid of this Messenger service? These messages are really getting annoying, sending me links to pr0n sites or spam messages while i'm playing games.

They're netsend messages... damn they can be annoying. Here is how you turn them off. I'm assuming you have XP.

1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. Administrative Tools
4. Services
5. 2x click on MESSENGER
6. Under the GENERAL tab, look for the option DISABLE under STARTUP TYPE:

hope that helps. :)

It's not meant to be used in that way, but I believe Windows 2000 and NT had it as well.

Just run msconfig and disable messenger. It's completely useless as a legitimate program anyway.

Interesting.
I run 2000 and haven't come across that, though.. I have little experience with XP.

Actuall, if Messenger service was used the way it was supposed to be (over a LAN, to communicate with operators of other PCs) it would be quite useful. As others pointed out, both NT and 2k have the service as well, so don't bash XP for it.
