Like I've told you before, keep your hobbies/interests, paycheck, and self-image seperate.

not what I'm talking about at all.... sorry for making the association. I could give a sh!t less about the car.... I'm curious what the people who are in those kinds of financial situations at our age deal with from a psychological standpoint when money isn't really their number one concern.

You may want to find a better target audience than a bunch of disillusioned IT guys neffing from work (a.k.a ATOT). :)

thanks. if it means anything to you, I am currently being pro-active by deciding not to let this stream of conciousness interact with my inate need to feel anxiety :)

Keep repeating this process until you are lucky enough to retire that is if the fvcking feds don't keep raising the retirement age and also by the time you get there Social security will be a fond memory.

I hope that helps you.

No, it is the overwhelming truth. Sad but true really. I'm being serious and so is gigapet, seriously.

Because I have the ability to amuse myself endlessly with a few hackey sacks, I think I'll stay far happier than most others as I grow older. :p

Well, I'm 29 and have been at my company almost 6 years now. I'm a desk jockey / paper pusher / whatever you wanna call it. Cubicle. My job combines a 'field' element too which is awesome and provides amazing percs in the better weather. It can take me up to 1 hour to get to the property I have to inspect, so on the way you basically sit back in the company car and crank some tunes. Very gravy - when I first got the job and began doing it - I was like, wow. This is where it's at. And it never really faded - I love that side of the job.

As for life... well... yeah I'm married to a great woman, have with a great new house. No kids yet though - we're in that very enjoyable phase where you just sit back and live life & work. I keep myself busy with golf in the summer and pickup hockey in the winter - I'm basically just a big kid. I do quite a bit of gaming too especially in the winter. btw I love the AT forums too - the community here reminds me of my old c=64 BBS scene although it's infinitely bigger & more complex. Still somewhat finding my way around.

I guess for me I've grown up in strictly in years - I wouldn't say I'm immature but I definitely hang on to my youth. I consider where I'm at right now to be the product of both hard work and luck. I dreamed of this lifestyle and now I'm living it - what can I say, I love it. You won't find many more optimistic people though, to the point where I might sound annoying. I just knock on wood and say hey, hopefully tomorrow is just as good as today. I had some tough times growing up - probably just your average dysfunctional family crap - but I think it makes me cherish the humdrum lifestyle I find myself in now. I hope that gives you some insight OP!

edit: oh and btw I have no idea what a G35 is. I drive a crappy 96 Grand Am. :D

My daily shat used to be the high point of my day. I'd look forward to it. Then a few weeks ago I got a hernia from straining on a rough turd. Now I can't even enjoy pooping :(

College is easy in the fact that all you had to do was study. Follow these classes, study, and graduate. That's all to it.

The real world presents a much greater range of options. What do you do with your money? Spend it all, spend some, invest? 401k, IRA? Buy a new car like 95% of college grads or save? Buy a house or rent? Pay off bills now, pay off student loans, etc. Go to grad school now or later?

The responsibility factor is so much greater that it can easily burn you out and overwhelm you. You're no longer being told what to do, and left on your own to make yourself a responsibile individual.

Here's my take ... take the good job, save up some money, learn what you really want to do, then strike out on your own, answering to no one but yourself. Work only as much as you need, and pursue other interests. Caveat: if your other interests include only CS ... you might just want to end it now. But once you're older, having a nice car, the 'burbs etc., are not so important.

Living comfortably, and having learnt what you truly want to do is the key!

They don't call it the rat race for nothing. Fortunately, I dropped out of it for the most part. Being self-employed is the way to go if you're so inclined.

I'm sure you're not doing anything 'wrong' per se... i'm trying to think of that saying.... one man's something is another man's yadda yadda. Can't quite remember it now. I guess an extreme example would be to take someone that lives in a cardboard box and switch lives with him. I think after a couple minutes you would appreciate everything. Well, what's that movie with Nicholas Cage when he switches lives? I'm just yammering here, I don't even know what my point is. I think it's basically something along the lines of, "How bad can it be?"

Job: check
House: check
Food: check

S/O is optional I guess, as is a hobby / something to do in your spare time. Everyone's opinion on what makes life good is different. Some of us are simpler than others right? :)

YEP! even though I am making more now than in college, I still dont end up saving anything because of various bills - loan bills, rent bills, phone bills, car bills, insurance bills, CC bills, gf bills, go out on fridays to keep you sane bills, ...and the list goes on.

I dont think I'd have enough money unless Im making close to 100K/year. and Im FAR FAR away from that

life after graduation...let's see i consider myself average student w/ non-specilized major (econ) who started working since december 2004.
there certainly is some kind of excitment when you graduate, but soon it is replaced by feeling of not knowing what you are gonna do next.
suddenly, sitting around & do nothing is not fun at all.
i was one of those ppl who took forever to find a job (i was being little bit picky)
work is kinda mundane, and repetitive. pay is okay but tax eats away lot more than i thought. remaining money is used to pay bills.
i got about 2k in credit card bill after college, so i've been paying it off since december last year, and it's down to half & i'm thinking i'll be able to save up some money starting march.
then there is car, insurance, rent payment. G35 is out of my league, but i'm happy with my new mazda3 and 1bd apt.
As of future, my company does have tuition embersmetn(?) plan, so i plan to continue my education through that & since it's japanese company they teach japanese too :)
Sometimes when i see/read some people in my age driving 30K+ car and living life of bling bling, i do wonder how they do it. but i try to be happy with what i have & work hard.
So to sum it up, life after graduation is, for me, difficult & exciting.

You get to switch from hating school to hating work. It's actually not all that different.
