What is life expectancy of a dvd burner?

I have liteon 812s and have been using this more then a year ago, dates back to 5/01/04
Is it about to cease to function? Would it be a good idea to have the manufacturer fix it for a fee or just buy a new one with better burn capability? Nothing last forever and recently its been burning giving quite a few coaster already, a sign of death awaiting my beloved burner.

unless you've been burning 10 DVDs a day it should last much longer than a year.

Why bother to spend time and money burning second-rate compressed copies of movies?

Get an unlimited rental plan from netflix or blockbuster, and if you want to see a movie again, just rent it a again.

I bought my DVD burner so I can backup my files pn one or two DVD-RW discs, and so I can laser label my CD-R's when I want it to be a professional looking presentation.

What does this have to do with how long a burner going to last? You're talking about morally here, going way off-topic. Get a clue already, I have no interest in movies or anything average folks do because of boredom. How the f**k am I able to backup my hd if there is nothing to backup with??? another hd? yea, that's really econimical :roll:

You burn 8-12 GB of data a day and it isn't movies? That's unusual.

I use my DVD-R's to burn backups of all the regular cd's I have. Just make isos from the cd-roms and put a bunch onto one dvd-r then lock it up in case I F up the originals

If you're using DVD to backup, it would probably be a better idea to invest in a small tape drive...

Of course, you have to store the back-ups off site to be fully effective, however...

Just get a Nec 3520a, the're only $60... I have 3 of them and a Plextor. Now adays there soo cheap...

Is the failing burner internal or external? I always get external because they can be turned OFF when not burning. Internals are on all the time.

ive never lost a cd or dvd burner, i just upgrade every few years, and never have problems, it will last as long as you want it to, unless your hit it, or drop it. the nec nd3520a is a very good quality burner and wont break easily
