So what is it? I live maybe 20 miles from you, and I've seen that plant before, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it is.

I'm in the Northeast and I know it's growing on the side of my house right now, but I have no idea what the hell it is.

It's only a plant for a season, then it turns into something else....unless you cut it down....then it's a plant again 😉

Have you discovered the mythical butterfly plant? That turns into a butterfly and then returns to a plant after its done traveling? 😛

Looks like a royal empress tree to me

It grows incredibly fast (8ft + per year) and it's leaves can be easily 12 inches across. My parents had one, it's more of a "weed" tree than anything else.

Also known as Paulownia Tormentosa

I believe that he means that it gets woody after a season and resembles a real tree. Otherwise, you can cut it down every year, and it'll faithfully comeback over and over again.

I know, because I tried to get rid of one, and it's not as easy as it sounds.

Hint; I know what it is 😉

Then why the **** are you asking us?

Because it's not a common garden plant, so most people don't know what it is.

No, but I'd love to have a Butterfly Bush or 2 in my garden.

Hey...we have winnar!

Like I said, its not a weed in my gardens, but in some areas it is considered an invasive plant (weed) It makes an excellent Garden plant with the dramatic leaves, and an excellent shade tree in just a couple of years.

In some places its revered and highly prized, old growth trees in the NE USA (The seed pods were used as packing material for China exported around the world in the 19 Century, which led to their spread in the NE USA where the seeds could propogate) fetched thousands of dollars from Japanese wood carvers (why they hunted their distinctive leaves by helicopter in the 70's in the NE)

I'll post some pictures later today of some of my more mature trees.
