i don't get it. it was working fine last night and this am...nothing but blue screens and rebooting. i've reduced the o/c, did system restore, even an image install. i think it's a video card driver issue (f'n ati/amd). it boots fine in safe mode. i've uninstalled / reinstalled vc drivers. same stuff. virus scans, malware, spyware turn up nothing. read boot logs and they're bitchin' about vc drivers. ok i get it. but how can they be ok one day and not the next?!? i don't use "automatic updates" but do it manually. i find it strange that windoz7 has and update for my x2 but not the other 4870. it's the same friggin' gpu!
anyway, i'm writing this on my old o/c'd opteron 165 with an evga nf-41 with half a dozen caps blown out and 2 7900 GT SC Co's in sli running XP Pro. this rig's rock solid. I just didn't have the $ to go i7 / x58 / sli but now i guess i'm paying the price on the backend with lousey drivers. rig stats in sig.
flame away.

I doubt it's Drivers. I'd be checking out Hardware, like a dying Video card or possibly Motherboard.

damn.... i think your right about the video card. ati drivers won't install. in device manager the first core on my x2 has a warning. sux. i dunno. i'm going to remove the x2 and see how that goes. try running off my single 4870 ( which is no slouch) maybe go crossfire with another single card. heck, they're only $89.00!

I feel bad for you. I know you spent alot of money when you built that (still) fast rig. I had a PSU go on me and take out one of my 8800GTs. How frustrating.

it's the x2...dam. killer card in the day. i removed it, moved my 4870 (which is no slouch in it's own right). ran some synthetics and it's been rock solid tho two third's slower.. i read on hot deals you can still get a 1 gig 4870 for like $90.00. crossfire, here i come. i guess there's no need for something like trifire or quad sli imho. it comes down to bragging rights.
well, maybe i shouldn't say that. those rigs kickass it's just i don't really need that kind of horsepower. i put that kind of cash in my avatar :).

If you really did a system restore to a point where it was working, then your problem isnt drivers or software.

So glad I saw your thread, fellow dead 4870X2 brother! I didn't realize 4870s were so cheap! If I can find them for $100 each I'll buy two today.

ps
I also don't think it's drivers. The patch is for Capcom games...nothing to do with booting up.

yeah, i think your right. i'm going to mount it in the same frame as the original 2 x gpu. my old 3DFX 5500 (btw, that asian chick is hot, showing a little booty) you know which side is going to be showing outward :)
Btw, a fellow trader sent me a link to a XFX 1 gig 4870 for $99.00 after rebate at the egg. i pulled the trigger for crossfire. if you want the link, i'll send it.
