What is it with musicians and drugs?

It's like the most famous musicians were all junkies, I was going to list some of them but then I realized the list is endless, they were all on drugs.
Do drugs make you THAT much more creative, or its just the type of people who happen to be good musicians who also have a big craving for getting stoned. :Q
I personally never tried drugs before (or planning to) so I don't really know.

I was definitely high back in my band days. Not heroin and stuff, we just smoked pot (actually there was some acid and shrooms every once and a while, but not regularly). We wrote some great songs while high, but I don't think is a prerequisite to writing good songs.

It's a culture thing. Also back in the late 80's and early 90's, cocaine was widely used in Wall St investment banks and brokerage firms.

Take the best orgasm you've ever had. Multiply it by a thousand and you are still nowhere near it

said by Renton's character in trainspotting (1996) regarding heroin.

There you have it.

I'm a musician & artist and while I don't use drugs, I use quite a bit of alcohol.

I don't know about cocaine/heroin/LSD or the people that take ecstasy (or get wasted) and go crazy to techno/trance/whatever they call it...but marijuana definitely enhances listening to Sigur Ros or Pink Floyd. It feels more..spacey.(?)

I imagine if drugs can enhance listening to music, they sure as hell can enhance the music creation process. Plus, some artists need to be high to deliver knockout live performances or their fans get pissed. I believe nobody liked going to a Nirvana concert and seeing a sober Cobain. Drugs have ended the careers of a lot of musicians - but at least we got Alice in Chains out of it. :) :(

Listening to Bob Segar's 'Turn the Page' (and Metallica's cover of it), I guess I understand why a hugely successfuly artist that makes millions and spends months on the road, playing dozens of back-to-back concerts would develop an addiction. I just wish the guys didn't die doing it.

alcohol is a drug, so you actually DO use drugs. You drink coffee...drug use. It's all relative to your perspective on intoxicants and how acceptable it is to you in social aspects.

Dear god youre a dope. There is nothing flawed about how the limbic system responds to reward.

What is it with the greatest american writers all being drunks?

Well, based off of your own logic, you aren't really in any position to tell me if what I use is a drug or not.

Flawed meaning those who, despite their concerted efforts, are unable to breathe easily / rest their heads / conquer their demons / find satisfaction / be at peace or at least understanding with something / let go of something / etc etc..

A much different topic, but you could view it that way. I was pointing out that flaw in the way many people view alcohol compared to other substances.

Altered states of mind are fantastic to explore. It's so new and different it can inspire creativity. Of course if you're high 24/7, sobriety is the new and interesting experience... :p

PS - any psychotropic substance is a drug. It's always funny to watch people separate drugs from alcohol from caffeine, as if they're not one and the same. In fact alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs around.

I'd be a lot more creative on drugs than without. I play guitar, and am by no means anything good, but the times I had the most ideas for songs were usually when I was drunk or high on painkillers.

Who says you have to be a doctor to make that kind of conclusion?

I think it's a lot more simple than you guys are purporting it to be. All this psychology BS is irrelevant.

Why do musicians use a lot of drugs like heroin and cocaine and whatnot?

Because they CAN.

and drugs DO make you more creative... but if you're a no-talent ass-clown to begin with drugs won't really do much for your creativity.

you gotta have some talent to begin with...
