Question What is it with browsers losing tabs on reboot?

This happened with Chrome, and I'd have to treat it as very fragile trying to have it re-open tabs.

Now I'm using Edge. Usually, it's re-opened the tabs. Just now, on a second reboot, I clicked the browser to start it and it opened with no tabs. Lost them all. I can look at history to get some idea of things that were open, and manually re-open those, but what the hell is wrong with browsers?

If you think about it it's a good privacy feature if the device is shared, lost or stolen. It could also be a good security feature if you landed on a bad site and had to kill the browser and reboot. In that case you wouldn't want to end up back on the same site once you reopened the browser.

In firefox you can click settings and restore previous session. No idea if it works after a reboot though since I always start fresh sessions because I run sandboxed. It does work reliably after closing the browser though.

Never really had that problem with the last few years of Firefox Nightly versions.

Craig, I honestly think that perhaps your OS SSD or RAM is going. Something is causing disk / memory corruption in your system. That would explain your driver install hanging, if the registry info were corrupted somehow.

Maybe it's time for a backup (Macrium Reflect Free works here) to a portable external HDD (make an Image of your OS partition), and then Secure Erase your OS SSD, and then install a Fresh copy of Windows 10 2004.

Sometimes the cruft builds up, and sometimes hardware issues cause cruft.

I was contemplating the same thing, when a USB flash drive wouldn't load in one of my front USB3.0 ports, and it made Disk Management and Explorer.exe hang up, and then I tried to Restart, and it sat there for like literally 20 minutes, spinning, saying "Restart". There were no pending updates to my knowledge. Finally hit RESET, then Power-Off, then Power-on, then booted into Windows.

But sometimes, when Restart gets interrupted in the middle, it can cause cruft, and corrupted registry files.

Firefox sounds like it works differently than Chrome and Edge on restoring tabs.

It makes sense to have suspicions, but I'm dubious of that at this point. For example, since that, I've seen no issues, and it did 'complete' without problem. It's not as if I'm in safe mode with corrupted graphic drivers. I did make a restore point before upgrading, in case of problems like this, but didn't need to restore it. Something to keep an eye on.

Normally I close all open browser windows manually before shutdown. Somewhat rarely the tabs will all be gone, not sure why. I suspect its got something to do with the automatic version updates.

Just happened again. Windows was very insistent about an upgrade, so I clicked restart to install it, after, Edge had lost all the tabs (as always) with no 'restore' popup. I had tried a program like that 'onetab', but think it might have had an issue.

go into Egde settings and click on On Startup and then check Continue Where You Left Off.
