You don't really get how this works, do you? It's not like you're going apartment shopping.

BTW, my dorms didn't have whiteboards on the doors.

I'm sure they're great if you're not drunk and sleeping on the floor. Of course I have no idea what this would be like, I only know from what amdskip has told me about his visits ;)

You don't have much privacy.

You'll get to know a buttload of people in a short period of time (those on your hall). This can be a good thing since I'm still in touch with several from my freshman dorm 10+ years later.

Roomate: can be a great thing, can totally suck if he's an idiot. It's pretty much a crapshoot. I got lucky and had a cool roomie.

Can be loud and annoying as hell if you're trying to study and everyone else is throwing down.

Don't expect the Hilton; most dorm rooms are pretty spartan.

Don't keep lots of expensive/irreplaceable items in your dorm. Stuff gets stolen. Additionally, keep your door locked when not in the room. Be anal about this, make sure your roomie is too and you're much less likely to have stuff walk away.

Work something out up front with roommate regarding female visitors. Some of the biggest fights I got into with the roommates I had in college were because their girlfriend/the chick they picked up that night/etc were spending too much time in the room or they had me locked out while boinking. Work out what's appropriate ahead of time and save yourself a headache.

always wear slippers in the public shower, and try not to touch the walls.... you'll catch ringworms.

some people are really disgusting... i've heard of people taking a dump in the shower stalls

At UM, living space is very limited, so your dorm room is no larger than 12 * 15, and my single was 8 * 12.......not so great. ;) But most colleges seem to have great rooms to live in.

As for the lifestyle........as long as you can settle in and get along with some people, it will be a grand time. ^_^

UM huh, no kidding. The dorms there are teh suck. I was lucky enough to get a double/single in Hecht, but those dorms are so small, they might as well be a single anyway. Needless to say, most dorms are VERY small and mostly overpriced. I had to temporarily leave college on the acct that UM wanted to charge me $3k for one semester in that room. :|

Experience the dorm for one year, then move off campus.

Dorms sometimes smell like rotting cottage cheese. Get a place of your own or see if there are on-campus apartments.

my experience is that dorm life can be mad fun if you:

a) take care of all your school work during the day, so you don't have to worry about it while everyone else is partying
b) are able to adjust to much dirtier conditions than you're used to

oh yeah...take a walk around campus while sober on your first day there to avoid getting lost on the first night of drinking.......longest/worst walk home EVER, heh.

Well I was(still am) a freshman this year and my roomate has been pretty cool. Even though I'm at a private school things are still pretty happening. In college someone in the dorms is always up to something. Albeit my room is a prison cell (12.1 X 12.1) you will enjoy being away from your family and living with someone else. I am currently an ECE major (electrical computer engineering) and my roomate is pre-med with a focus on Bio-Chemistry (he has even thought about changing tracts to a Degree in Religion). We get along very well.

College is fun, but there is also a lot of work you have to do. My advice is to try and get onto a quiet/honors floor if possible. A quiet floor is never "quiet" but it will be possible to get work done unlike an unregulated hall where you are pretty much at the mercy of whoever bought the new "DMX" album.

Well good luck with your school decisions : )

Make sure to stock up on tea bags from the dining hall... they take smells out of rooms really fast :)

PS: agree w/ the post somewhere above, try to get into a "theme" dorm. I was in an honors dorm, and it was perfect. It didn't mean we didn't get drunk or party, though, so don't worry about that :D

Typically, there's a very limited amount of rooms that are anything other than one room with two people in it, and a big communal bathroom somewhere on the floor. You'd be lucky to get any of these rooms (singles, or suites, or whatever). Typically, if you're not one of the first to sign up, there's only plain old double rooms left. You get a roommate, you share a room, you each get a bed and a desk, and you get to walk down the hall to the bathroom.
