Yes I know this, but what I don't understand is why educated and intelligent people continue to believe in age old "folk tales" regarding life after death? How could the people who wrote the bible understand what life after death was if they themselves haven't died?

i think life after death is more attractive because the notion that after you die, nothing is lef,t is a bit depressing... i'm a science kind of guy and i still lean towards there is something after death. call it wishful thinking but since we don't know for sure i'd like to have some hope.

Think back to what life was like before you were born, this is obviously exactly what it will be like after you die. If there is an afterlife, (I give the chances 1 in a zillion) you will also see a lot of squid, monkeys, bugs, and animals in heaven, and no doubt many will probably not be too happy that you ate them.

Of course not! So why should our beliefs on life after death for humans be any different?


As a side note, I believe the concept of life after death was created by primitive man who needed a way to put order into society. If society knew for a fact that once you die, that's the end, then people would do horrible things without regard. Now with religion and life after death, people are told to life virtuous lives and to strive to have a good afterlife which is pretty much a false sense of security and a big illusion.

This is what I believe as well.

life after death is actually true in a since, you and I are made up of atoms, every part of us was once inside a star, and when we die our atoms will go on to create other things, but we shall remain unaware of it along with the untold millions of others (mostly plants/bugs I would think) who have shared our atoms.

I haven't read this whole thread yet so I don't know if someone has already brought this up, but does anyone think that the universe is like what the guy in K-Pax said? He said the universe collapses upon itself or something, and that we have lived our lives the same for eternity? What if we die, and we then find ourselves coming out of our mothers womb? Maybe it's one huge cycle. Nietzche said something similar to this.

another interesting fact is the universe is still accelerating, makes me wonder if it will ever hit terminal velocity, and if so at what speed? almost the speed of light maybe? who knows.

If I would ever commit suicide, it wouldn't be because i'm depressed and hate my life. It would be because I am so curious to see what happens after you die.

I believe in an afterlife and I have absolutely no fear of dying. As long as i'm not tortured or die extremely slowly i'm actually kind of looking forward to it.

If they are in heaven... they won't be upset at all... I would like to see at least enough for a foursome... but if I must I can go as a threesome... do you suppose Angels golf? hmmm

Quantum physics is much easier to handle... Astro physics gets into to the beyond the beyonds... what is beyond the universe... what can be the beginning... is the universe expanding and why... it sould be contracting...
It seems to me eternity is the critera necessary to understand everything.

Historians agree, I think, that Jesus was a real person. Now, either he was a nut or as he said the Son of God... God OR he didn't say anything at all and every one who heard him say nothing were dreaming.
It is Ok to believe in Rocks, Astrology, Physics, Astronomy and not to believe in a diety... seems odd to me to hear that kind of logic... but, I believe that Jesus is real and is God .... if I didn't I'd have a major gap in my life... probably filled with pizza and hot fudge sundaes.. over time.
