I work with a lot of designers and web developers. So I can completely understand why they need Mac systems for their day-to-day duties. But for myself (I work strictly on the marketing and advertising end) there's no real compelling reason or need. Yet, they remain adamant that we need to 'convert' as though it would be a religious awakening.

We lease our systems at my office and our lease will be coming up for renewal next spring. Currently half my department uses Macs, half use PCs. But the constant pressure from all our Mac users have now convinced a couple of the PC folks (including my boss) that we ALL need Macs. It's basically as though we're not cool enough geeks if we don't have a Mac.

I realize with the Mac and Boot Camp I can dual boot into Windows. But again, what do I really need Mac's OS for that I can't do with my PC already? I'm not anti-Mac (had one at the office back in the OS 7/8 days.) But since W2K I've honestly never had any major problems with an MS-based system either.

Has anybody else run into this? Maybe I'm just being too rational, but if there was a real need I could understand it. To me, the push for change seems more concerned with scoring image points.
 
Mac users have an evangelical drive to convert all non-believers.

No need to try to convert people when 90% of personal computers are PC's....that's why PC users don't do the same...that and linux users don't have time between keystrokes to come out of their parents' basements and concede that GUIs are superior 🙂
 
I've joked with them that even if they force me to get a MacBook Pro that I'm ONLY going to run Vista on it. God how that would irritate some of them. 🙂

just ignore them parrotheader, unless they're trying to take away your PC and replace it with a mac. If they're just trying to get you a mac in addition to a PC, well, hey, free mac. Might be worth something on fleabay. 😉

Here's where I'd normally say something like "but seriously, just tell them you can do everything you need to with your windows pc", but logical arguments fail with mac zealots

Oooh, good one! Go so far as to delete the OSX partition so Windows can have more space 😀
 
Those people are the largest reason i don't like Macs.

I dont think i could live life as a "Mac person" (no offense to casual mac users)

I am a "Mac person". People usually just see me on my computer and are wowed. Then you add in the no virus and spyware factor and lots of people want to switch. I don't go out of my way to tell people they should switch though.
 
Because the main weakness of macs = not enough users to draw enough software designers..


sooo, by constantly trying to convert people, they are trying to gain an equal marketshare and increase the amount of software written for their platform.
 
The fact that my boss is now wavering toward wanting us all to get them is the only thing that really has me concerned.

But I have a feeling once the renewal time comes around and they start adding up the costs (~$3,000 each for the MacBook Pros with a Windows license, Parallels, etc V/S ~$1,500 for very nice Thinkpads or Toshibas) the end result will likely take care of itself.

If you think your Mac turns heads, you should see the reaction I get from people when they see my laptop running Ubuntu/Edgy with Beryl WM. The cube never fails to impress. Then you add in the it's free factor.....
 
Some aspects of OS X wow me a bit but too many things about it are annoying. I use my friend's all the time for basic things like PowerPoint, Word, and viewing PDF files in Safari along with my work and it's really a huge pain.
 
I don't really care if it turns heads or not. I don't own my computer to convert people, I own it to use it. My OS is free as well. It comes with my Mac 🙂

I have been thinking about getting Ubuntu on my Mac though, I already have Windows for CS:S. Maybe that will be a project for my winter break...
 
i dont understand how web development would be more efficient on a mac than on windows. all i use when developing for the web is ultraedit.
 
Mac users, the ones that are straight mac users anyway, tend to be narcissistic, and they believe their point of view is the only proper one.
 
well, as long as it's a MacBook Pro, great! delete OS X and put Vista on it! a great notebook. why should you complain?

as for the reason that they want you to convert so much, think about it like this: mac users are a minority. slowly growing, but still only 3-4%. they want others to join their small sect!
 
When I had all win xp machines i grew so tired of macintosh morons telling me I cant do this, cant do that on my win machine. I briefly ran linux and was told the same thing by win users. Eventually when I uppgraded recently i choose a mac book pro c2d. The main deciding factor was that i like the OS. Now all my friends who run windows tells me its crapp. They have never used one but they know it sucks.
There are plenty of zealouts among all systems. You just happen to be annoyd by those who is not runing the same system as you do. I could never imagine how much critisism you have to hear simply for running mac.
I used be be like that my self but i guess i grew upp when the amiga was knocked out.
 
I was interested in buying a mac when I got my new laptop but they are way overpriced. I got a system with similar specs for about 40% less money than a powerbook.
 
Well I always counter that if Macs are so great, why does my IT dept that supports 2450 XP pcs with 4 guys have another guy dedicated soley to supporting the Macs?

I am personally going to distribute a Mac virus wherever I go so people stop saying that.
