what is in a wheel hub.

Looking at the parts diagram, I got a question, are all wheel bearings held in via snap rings?

I'm thinking maybe they forgot to put of the two in or something. Or would they fall completely apart without them.

Car was only driven for 5 miles tops on the new bearing

Bearing should be press fit by the outer race into the knuckle and then followed by a snap ring on one or both sides.

Then the hub is pressed into the supported inner race of the bearing. No snap ring on the hub, that's what the axle nut is for.

You need to pull the axle out to see what is moving relative to each other, there are only three possibilities:

1) hub and entire bearing is moving in the knuckle (eg: outer race moving in the knuckle); missing snap rings or cracked knuckle bearing pocket

2) inner race and outer race are moving separately (eg: bad bad bad bearing)

3) hub is moving around inside the inner race (eg: hub backed out of inner race press fit due to unsecured axle nut).

It was hub related. I took the spindle off and was able to still have a small amount of play on the hub, enough to make that movement.

took it to the shop who pressed it in, they looked. Told me the hub wasn't fully seated, they re-pressed it in a little more. There is a hair for movement now, a lot less then before. But once i bolted the spindle up to the axle. It was nice and solid. Happy it seems like its solved for now. No play in wheel at all now. Not exactly sure i understood what and why it happened. I thought a press had a gauge to measure amount of force and once its at the spot its good, kinda like a TQ wrench. But hey i'm happy there is no more play in that wheel.

big thanks to you guys for explaining things I couldn't understand. I had a better then average concept understanding but you guys taught me a lot more.

Glad it got worked out, make sure you're comfortable with that bearing seat - particularly after running the car with it wobbling around.

I've seen those seats crack after having something pressed in 2-3 times, they aren't that durable in my experience.
