What is GT?

What does the GT mean in cards like 6800GT?

And it's variations like 7800 GTX

And there was Geforce 2 GTS back in the day.

What is GT?

Thank you.

GTS back in the GF2 days meant gigatexel shader. Today it's just a marketing term to denote a higher end product than a card without the moniker.

Probably means nothing. Like someone else here said about it being used it cards. Normally for example a Grand Am GT or Mustang GT usually means its more powerful than non GT cars(one has V6 the other V8 or at least I think). So it's really just saying the 6800GT is more powerful than the plain 6800. I guess it's just the only thing ppl could come up with that sounds good.

But 6800Ultra beats them both.

Could mean Greater Than if it means anything? But Greater Than what?

it's marketing speak that means nothing. i guarantee you that 'GTS' was thought up before 'gigatexel shader'

In cars, "GT" has always stood for "Gran Turismo." Doesn't make much sense for a video card. 🙂

For the price when these first came out, they may as well be the Gran Turismo of cards.

Umm, I believe the GT in cars means - Grand Touring, not Turismo. At least the Mustangs, Pontiac's and such called it Grand Touring.

you don't let anything get by you

They have enough marketing. A total newbie to graphics would expect a 256 Meg 9250SE(suckers edition) to beat a 128 Meg 6600GT.

Guess what turismo means? 😀

Most people associated the GT with cars meaning it's better.

Most people see a GT on a video card and think they're like cars. It's got a GT on it, that must mean it's better.

Simple marketing.

Gots Towel

"A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta?wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat?wrap it around your head to ward off noxious fumes?any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it ? win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

Grand Turismo/Touring eXtreme!!!111!!!1!, obviously. 😛

The original "Gran Turismo" (or "GT") auto races were held in Italy, where they speak... wait for it... Italian. 'Gran Turismo' is translated to English as "Grand Touring".
