Some retailers have supported RF cards for a long time and specifically disabled the readers when Apple Pay came out.

They are working on a competing standard that doesn't use RF at all, but looks at something like a QR code on your phone screen. Their system should bypass transaction fees from CC companies, but it's definitely more frustrating for the customer.

Yea, in fact I only used my phone to pay at CVS for the last year. Suddenly a new iphone comes out and I can't use it :-(

We've had chip cards for over a decade. Most retailers don't have the right system to use that feature.

Well, outside of the us chip and pin has been in use for a long time. Quite a few places in the US already have the readers. I've used my chip CC that way before. I suppose it depends where you are, but most readers I run into day to day already have the slot.

The big big big issue with this is it is a debit system. That means you get none of the protection of your CC. If there is fraud, your funds are gone until they sort it out. Screw that.
