what is games for windows live? or G4WL

I bought a few pc games over the weekend. And one of them says "live" on Lost planet extreme : colonies edition. I haven't installed it yet, still waiting for my new build to be finished in a week or so.

What's that supposed to mean?

- do I need an account to play the game?
- What's the drm deal with windows?
- Any experience? (only steam for me atm)

Yes you need an account. If you have an XBox Live account already then you can use that since GFWL is basically Xbox Live ported to the PC.

Some games purchased through GFWL authenticate to their servers. I think that's it as far as DRM.

My experience (1 game): meh. It doesn't do anything that Steam already does and it has a pretty clunky interface. MS really seems to put minimal effort into making it a service that gamers would actually want to use.

Utterly useless. You can't even add, manage or talk to friends unless you're playing a game.

Sheesh, you all act like it's a plague or something. It doesn't really interfere with your ability to play games. You can play games in offline mode (meaning you don't ever need an internet connection to play).

If you don't want GFWL in your games, I hear you can use Liveless...or something

Just wondering that's all, I rather play the game than signing up for something else to play the game 🙂

I quite like it. Lets me chat with my friends on Xbox Live, and gives me another excuse to get achievements.

I've never had a problem with it, but I find it to be utterly useless. As such, why is it required? Because everyone wants to act as though they are "cutting edge" when it comes to social media these days. MS is just failboating miserably with GFWL

A ghetto version of something other companies already do better.
It is needed to get Dawn of War 2 working, and for that reason alone I hate it.
