what is faster: Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 for photoshop

Just wondering before I upgrade...

For photoshop...what is faster...an Athlon 64 2.8 Ghz or a P4 3 Ghz w HT. Figure 1 GB RAM for each system, and a 7200 120GB HD for each system, both running Win XP Pro.

Anyone know or have experience with both systems?

well, if you could afford to get a P4 3.0C, then y dont u just get an athlon64 3000+ instead of the 2800+? anyways, if there WERE such thing as an a64 2.8GHz, then it would definitely beat any computer at anything. otherwise, the a64 would be better in the long run as there are more 64 bit programs and drivers.

mmm my bro runs a A64 with photoshop. it is pretty fast for him and his monsterous images.

P4 should be better since its intel optimized and has higher fsb

According to the PC World benchmarks, the A64 at 2.0GHZ and the A64 FX-51 both run faster than a 3.2GHZ P4. The P4 does not have a higher FSB than the A64, since it runs at 1600MHZ effectively, or 800MHZ x 2. Intel optimized would not matter since the A64 has SSE and SSE2.

Yes... agreed. Buy The A64

Thanks you guys...

one last question...

Will my PC2700 RAM work alright on a Socket 754 mobo that supports 533mhz? I can upgrade the RAM later when prices drop, but right now the A64 cpu and mobo would be the limit of my budget. 🙂

Say yes...please....say yes it will work alright...

🙂

Ya, you won't be able to enjoy very good numbers with your memory limited like that.

lmfao.... beat ANY computer at ANYthing? lol

From the benchies I've seen it depends what version of PS you have as to which is faster.

For the record..I was referring to the Athlon 64 2800+, which I mistakenly "nicknamed" the Athlon 64 2.8 Ghz lol...sorry bout that. 🙂

i do high end photo editing (im a photographer) and aside from cpu's... id recomend at least 1.5gigs ram and 2 seperate hdd's... or at the very least partion the main drive

some of the files i work w/ end up as 600+ meg .tiff files for large format printing... and it helps to hve the extra ram and seperate drives

Hey Mike,

I too am also a photographer 🙂, (I'll share a website at a later date once it's polished up) and appreciate your input. I do in fact have two HD's and will buy another 512MB DIMM soon enough, but my main usage will be for files under 80MB, so for now I'm fine with 1GB and a 7200 RPM 120 GB drive.

What processor are you using though? And have you run PS on other cpu's for the tasks you do in your own profession?

GS

im ashamed to say what cpu im using, lol... money is tight and ive invested a good deal of money in the last few years on camera gear, mainly upgrading from my eos rebel x to an eos a2 w/ vertical grip then to an eos 10d last summer

i also run iPhotoForum.com so swing on by... my own personal online photogrpahy porfolio is MikePanic.com

so hopefully ill see you over on IPF too

Get the Pentium. This is the one area that P4's beat A64's, video rendering. If you are doing games, get the Athlon as it is faster there.

In about 40 days, Windows XP 64 bit should be out. Then we will see. Based on my personal experience with my beta copy of Win64, my guess is that it will more than make up the difference.

Get the Athlon64
