what is eating my Hard Drive space

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit, my Hard Drive is a 640 GB Western Digital, now I understand Windows itself takes come harddrive space, when I first installed Vista I started with 596 GB, since then I only have installed 2 games COD 4 and COD 5, and I have about 200 mp3's, everyday I check my hardrive space there is atleast 1 or 2 gigs gone

what is eating away at my Hard Drive space, is there a setting in Vista I need to adjust

please help this is really erking me

Turn off system restore for that drive OR if you MUST use it go to disk cleanup wizard and you can get rid of old restore points.

I just did that and cleaned up 100GB of carp.

your awesome bro, when I turned off system restore, 80 GB immediately came back

Nothing to do with Vista. Xp did exactly the exactly the same thing.
Sytem restore by default will use up to 15% of your drive. In Xp you could change the percentage. Don't know if it can be done in Vista, but then again I never bothered since the largest OS drive I ever use is 150gig raptor or a 50 gig partition size.

4. How to Change the amount of Memory System Restore can use.

(The Default is 15%, I would like to point out now that editing the registry can cause adverse affects. Only follow these steps if you know what you are doing or have made a good backup, use your own judgement)

? Click on Start (Vista Logo, Bottom left)
? Type into the search box regedit
? Click on Regedit
? Navigate to:
? HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\Cfg
? Double Click DiskPercent
? Under Base ensure Decimal is checked NOT Hexadecimal
? Change the vale in the value data box
(The Default is 15 and is measured in a Percentage %, meaning the default is 15%. If you put in 5 it would be 5%, also make sure the percentage you choose is going to give system restore more than 300MB or else system restore will not work. I hope this is clear)

? Once you have changed the Value to a percentage that is more acceptable to you Click Ok
? Now Close Regedit
? It?s always a good idea to restart after making changes to the registry

Shadow Copy is eating your drive. It'll usually take up to 30% of your drive or 30GB which ever is available at the time. It is quite useful, and I recommend it keeping it enabled. If it is really bothering you, you can use vssadmin to change the size to something you are more comfortable with.

Edit: Run cmd as Admin -> vssadmin resize ShadowStorage

You'll need to specifiy drive and size.

WinDirStat will graphically show you what's consuming your HD space.
