What is Distributed Computing..?

Great that you found your way here:

distributed computing is using the spare time (idle time, ie when you're not using it) of your home computer to help science. There are various projects ranging from finding new treatements for diseases to physics, astronomy, mathematics, climate change, ... Most projects are organized and funded by university research groups and/or research organizations.

distributed computing is a passion: it has never been as easy to do something good and you'll get addicted to the statistics of your personal contribution easily!

There are stil plenty projects to crunch, come on back in - the water's fine...
 
Not looking for credit on anything, but just would like to assist.

Something simple like the RC64 that I can fire off & forget.
No constant monitoring or configuration required
 
a very stable set and forget project is "help conquer cancer" from www.worldcommunitygrid.org (you need to choose it when installing)
I set that project on remote computers I can't access very often (they have been running for 2 years without one single check from me and have a low ram usage)
in general worldcommunitygrid is very stable and there's no risk trying another subproject from them

If you don't like a medical project, seventeenorbust.com is about prime numbers, very easy to setup and no need for babysitting

If you like physics, einstein@home is your choice

Lost my dad and brother-in-law from cancer within the past 3 years.

Sounds like a good oone to take on.

I will keep people posted and generate questions if needed.

I use to drop RC64 on laptops that were going in a 2 week burning before distribution for field people

 
Just a slight correction to what Philippart said about idle time.

Idle time refers to unused CPU power not when your not using your PC.
Anytime you're jusy surfing the net or watching vids (excluding HD maybe) even on a single core rig hardly any CPU power is used. DC makes use of this spare(idle) power to run some number crunching for a project. When the CPU power is needed, by say a game, the DC project will back off to allow the game full use of the CPU.

Sorry to be so long in getting back.
Got around to this last month

I installed the Cancer project with minimal headaches.
Now it is complaining that it can not access the internet to upload the work and get new work units.

I am using XP Pro with current service packs.
AVG (anti virus)
ZoneAlarm (Free) as the firewall
NetGear G router
Comcast modem to the cable internet.

There is no problem getting onto the Web via IE8 nor other applications such as AVG using their internal configuration to get information back/forth without user intervention.

Zone Alarm has been disabled and still no luck.

Theories?

Hmmm ... I wonder if you should have started a new thread to ask your question to get help?

We sometimes forget to look at the dates of posts and thus answer the wrong questions!

The program downloaded the first WUs and when finished could not send back the results, correct?

Something must have changed on the system?

Or it could be the project server is down? How long has it been trying to send back results?

To me, DC is justification for new computer parts, way to meet spouse, way to meet friends, way to meet people you can vent to while intoxed, and while not intoxed; place to share whatever the bloody hell you feel like; environment to do things you normally can't, and not do thing you normally can; shits and giggles, fun and addictions....
