An "SLR" camera is a Single Lens Reflex type camera (where the viewfinder looks directly through the camera optics, so you can see exactly what is going to be taken). This is generally only found on very high-quality professional or 'prosumer' cameras. Such cameras can usually take add-on lenses, and tend to be much higher quality (in terms of image adjustment features, shot speed, etc.) than non-SLR models.
