I am looking at getting a laptop and I have seen some that have XGA TFT and others that have active matrix TFT? What is the difference anyway?
A friend says that he thinks that the XGA is viewable if you look at the screen from all angles and active matrix, you have to look straight at it.

XGA refers to the native resolution of the LCD screen, for example:

SVGA = 800x600

XGA = 1024x768

SXGA = 1400x1024 (i think)

UXGA = 1600x1200

active matrix is one of the methods an LCD is manufacuted, as far as i know pretty much all TFT screens now are active matrix, just that some laptop makers mention it in thier specs and some dont

Not always true. I have a 15.4" Dell Inspiron 7400 and it's res is listed as SXGA = 1280x1024 . But my new Inspiron 8100 will be an SXGA also, but at 1400x1050.

They are apples and oranges. XGA is a level of resolution - 1024 x 768. Active Matrix is another word for TFT or Thin Film Technology. Your misguided friend is thinking of the older DSTN display (cheaper than Active Matrix), and that does have a narrower viewing angle.

SXGA+ is indeed 1400X1050. In addition SXGAW is 1600X1024, which I believe is the native resolution of the SGI 1600SW.

Then why were companies selling SXGA @ 1280x1024? It seems theres a skip between 1024 all the way to 1400?? Thats doesnt sound right. Theres probably no set standard for what they call SuperXGA and what the resolution is. It's probably anywhere from 1280 - 1400.
