they think your dumb. They know they arent audiophile and dont care about that crowd at all. Converters to converters to converts to converters is bad engineering but they want to sell the product.

It was either that, or add Dolby Live software to the soundcard like other vendors offer.

That would have been free for you instead of money for them, where is the sense in that!?

Dolby Live would drive the costs up as a proportion of the revenue from each sale goes to Dobly for any such devices. The only situation where it's handy is in home theatre and there's no point in having a card with a fantastic analogue stage if you're only going to use the digital out.

That said, I'd love Creative to release a purely digital version of the X-Fi - a couple of S/PDIF and TOS-Link ins, a couple of outs, no analogue stage whatsoever and DD-Live encoding. With its fancy new SRC algorithms it's far more suited to the digital domain IMHO. The card would be cheaper (Fewer caps and no ADC/DAC) to produce and smaller.
