What is considered to be a high cholesterol level?

I would say 200 since if it's above that you have an increased risk of a coronary heart disease.
What is important is also to know the fractions of total cholesterol (LDL,HDL) and triglycerides. The the LDL/HDL ratio and actual LDL-levels are more important than the total cholesterol level.

What is your cholesterol level? I assume you've taken a blood sample since you ask.

291.

It doesen't really mean anything unless we know the LDL to HDL ratio, as Matt points out.

I would say that's pretty high, though.

Where do I get my cholesterol level checked besides going to my primary care physician? Is that the only way ?

This is what my Doc told me:

Total cholesterol should be below 200
Triglycerides should be below 150.
HDL should be above 40
LDL should be less than 130, less than 100 is optimal.

Your answer here.

There has been some talk of lowering these a bit, but I don't think it is going to happen for political reasons (politics of medicine that is).

Aphex,

Go check your total lipid profile. 291 is pretty high but that with a low HDL/LDL ratio would not mean an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) . What's also important is checking whether you have any other risk-factors for CHD such as heredity, smoking, hypertension.

I wouldn't be too worried but it's definately worth checking up. Just go to your primary care physician to get that total lipid profile including a general risk profile. If you have a high LDL diet and perhaps even lipid-lowering therapy should be considered.
