what is cnr?

Communications and Network riser. You put the line interface card for the onboard modem unit there. Worthless? Nah. You get a well working modem for about an extra $10 from it - which then is on a fast chipset connection, not hogging the slow PCI bus.

"Software network" doesn't exist anyhow. If a CNR card does networking, then it just contains the PHYsical interface chip to a network MAC hardware unit that is already contained in the chipset.
