this is running all the time on my Win XP Prof. it will wear out my hard drive. what is it and what can I do about it?

Content Indexing Service.

It won't wear out your hard drive.

Turn off Indexing to stop the service.

My hard drive has been churning for days. And cntrl-alt-delete showed it was the only thing using any cpu and 50%. Deleted the process and it stopped. Maybe it was because I was getting low disk space warnings on my second hard drive - there was only a few meg free. I don't know. I uninstalled it. BTW, how do you turn it off?

Thanks.

Right click on my computer and go to manage. Under services and applications, look for the indexing service (not under services, but a separate thing). Right click it and choose stop.
