What is cheapest DDR400 that can do 2-2-2-5

So everyone, just curious what the cheapest RAM is out there that can reliably perform at DDR400 at timings of 2-2-2-5 or 2-2-2-10 on an AMD system.

I'm not too worried about overclocking, but perhaps someone can also recommend value RAM that can perform at 2-2-2-5 and also overclockers RAM that can go higher than DDR400.

You're not going to get valur RAM to run at those timings. You could check out PQI. I think 1 GB is around 200.00 at New Egg.

I have Ballistix and it runs at 2.5-2-2-5 all the way to 250. It's around 250 from Crucial for a gig.
 
Yes I agree. The Corsair Value series used to be a great and cheap OC but not 2-2-2 great and I run a gig of PQI 2-2-2-5 2.7v @ 254 ROCK solid mem. I also run some Patriot and Crucial Ballistix 222s and the PQI trumps all three macheens mang!

What is the fastest VALUE RAM out there for the cheapest price?

Judging by the sticky note found at the top of this forum, it sounds that Value RAM is only about 7-8% slower than the much more expensive stuff. The author of that article claims that almost any value RAM can run at 2-2-2

I personally thought it was B.S. myself. Can anyone back that article?

Sure, most value RAM can run 2-2-2...at DDR333, maybe. The 7-8 percent figure is the performance difference between tight and loose timings at the same frequency (i.e. MHz) and would seem to be exaggerated, at that.

Still not sure what you're asking. Do you want tight timings? Or do you want to overclock? You can find relatively cheap modules that will overclock well at CAS3, but won't be particularly fast at stock DDR400. That what you're looking for?

I guess what I'm looking for is proof of Zebo's claim in his sticky.

It says that value ram can run at 2-2-2-5 around PC3000 and that this is nearly as good as Crucial Ballistix running at PC3800 (237Mhz) at timings of 2.5-2-2 1T

Sounds like a crock of B dot S dot if you know what I'm saying.

It's impossible. I actually have a piece of memory that will not run 2-2-2, no matter what, it requires that the middle number be set to 3 on my KT400 board, for some reason, to operate at all. (No boot/post otherwise.)

In fact, I think I remember someone posting in a thread some time back, that they inquired to one of the major-brand memory companies, if you could often OC PC2700 to run at PC3200 at reduced timings, could you likewise underclock PC3200, to run at 2-2-2, and the answer was no, because those timings can depend on how the chips are designed, and some of them simply cannot do those timings, no matter what.

Now, if he's talking about a specific piece of memory from a specific mfg, sold into the "value ram" market category, then it's easily possible, since many times, the memory mfgs sell what they have, and you may be able to get top-end memory, without paying the top-end price, if you look carefully. Whatever chips that he may have tested, may indeed have been able to run at tighter timings at slower clocks. But that doesn't imply that it is possible with every single chip out there.
 
The difference in price between the standard JEDEC 3-4-4-8 timings vs 2-2-2-5 timing ram from OCZ for example is 199 CAN vs 359 CAN, for the equivalent amount and configuration. hardly worth the at most 5% performance difference or what not.

The same can probably be said for DDR2 JEDEC 4-4-4-12 vs OCZ's for instance 3-2-2-8 timing ram the difference is from 255 CAN vs 455 CAN. Though it is very tempting for bragging rights. 😀

I have been holding on to my 2 512MB sticks of Kingston Value RAM for years. The PC2700 stick has Winbond BH6 chips, and the PC3200 stick has BH5.. 😉 Both sticks run fine in dual channel together as high as 456MHz 2-3-2-5 / 2.75v :Q

If you find Value RAM with the right chips on a quality PCB, it could be a very good deal...

That's kind of what I was wondering, if he meant Kingston ValueRAM specifically. Some of them have had Samsung or Micron chips on there, and have been stellar overclockers. (Search some of the Kingston RAM threads in the Hot Deals forum from last year or the year before for more info.) That third DIMM I have is generic, and it is strange that it won't run 2-2-2 timings, because my other two DIMMs are 256MB single-sided KVRs, that will do better timings.

Part of the thing with those name-brand budget brands, that use different chips - in order to be able to guarantee compatibility of their DIMMs in systems no matter what DRAMs they use, they tend to under-spec their DIMMs and program the SPDs somewhat conservatively. So that would mean that if you get "good" chips, it's highly likely that they will be able to overclock above the specified timings.
 
PDP Patriot LL pc3200 stuff can do 2-3-2-5 (rated at), but some have had good luck at getting 2-2-2-5

can be found for about $170-180 at the egg
