Suspects:
1: Stock 9700 Pro

Anyone know? The sounds goes away when I go into sleep mode.

Lets see--What happens when your computer goes to sleep. The screen goes black and the drives stop spinning. The color black is not usually associated with any reduction in sound levels, although it is usually quieter at night in most areas. A motor driven mechanical object that has stopped, might be the suspect. Sorry, it's one of those days. R

Do something that'll use the hard drive and listen. Annoying whines usually are fans or hard drive.

May also want to check out your power supply. If it is old enough, the fan may be unbalanced and causing noise. Could also use a good cleaning of all fans in the system.

I would suspect that the WD SE was the culprit--they're notorious for it. I have a WD800JB currently and have had three different WD1200JB that all whined. Its not horrible if you have a pretty high noise floor--like in a public office building--but it can be excruciatingly annoying in a quiet home. Seagates, Samsungs, and the new Hitachis are much quieter. Even the Maxtors don't "whine" like this--although, they're louder than the three aforementioned brands.

It's your hard drive. I have the 80gb version and it does the same thing. When in sleep mode your Hard Drive stops spinning, that's why you don't hear it anymore.

You could RMA it, but you might get one that's even worse.

The loudest whine in my computer recently was coming from the stock fan on my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I replaced it with the silent Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer.

You can lightly and carefully touch the center axis of your 9700 fan to slow it down a sec and see if the whine changes pitch.

Define sleep mode.

If the noise does not stop when the Radeon fan is stopped then it is likely another fan which you can also test by holding in place with a pencil or something or it is the HDD or power supply.

For further testing, either be ready to interupt the normal OS boot process by entering CMOS setup upon main power-on or better yet use a DOS boot floppy.

Disconnect the HDD power cable before main power-on to determine if that is the source of the noise. If not, the power supply can whine when overloaded. The likely cause of overloading is the Radeon. Disconnect the Radeon power cable before main-power on. If the noise is absent a replacement power supply is required.

The fan on my 9600pro is the loudest fan in my entire comp, probably because it is the smallest mm fan.

I'll bet it's the hard drive. Some have a tendency to start making more noise after aging, usually it's a higher frequency noise. You can test by jabbing a pencil into the fan(s) before booting up.

It's the hard disk. I just gave my 80GB WDC an earlier retirement for a 120gb Seagate because I couldn't stand to be in the same room as the machine any more.

That is exactly my problem with the fan on my lowly MX440. I need to get that silencer as well. I cannot stand high pitched noises.

my WD1200JB does not whine at all...however, my old WD did whine. i don't recall the model number, but it was an old 5400rpm drive, and it wasn't a special edition. still, i wouldn't rule out your WD1200JB either. i've heard many complaints across the forums here that their WD special edition drives whine...guess i just got lucky with mine...

I'd say its the HDD. Its the only thing I know that make a anoying sound. Of course I have a Maxtor though that does it.

I believe FearoftheNight has enough opinions by now, let's see what the problem turns out to be....:wine:
