What is bluetooth?

Someone please explain bluetooth - is it the same as 802.11 wireless?

Its a short distance wireless connection protocol. If it was the same as 802.11b they would have called it wifi.

I can't wait until Bluetooth becomes as mainstream and cheap as USB is. We have 7 computers networked together in our basement ... words cannot describe the mess of wires!!! I want everything to go wireless.

My Logitech MX700 arrived in the mail yesterday from Mr. Jeff Bezos, woohoo $18 wireless mousie here I come!

Yes WiFi is quite cheap but I just wish the peripherals were all short range wireless as well.

bluetooth is for connecting devices together and with computers, not really meant for networks. such like usb, but then they made usb-ethernet adapters... bluetooth can be used for networking, obviously. it's a replacement for irda.
