What is better, the 6800GS or the 7800GT

I just got a new Dell PentiumD 3Ghz. system and it has a X600/256meg video card.
I was looking at ether a 7800GT or a 6800GS.
I see that the price of the 6800GS is a bit cheaper so I don't know if the extra cost will be worth buying the 7800GT.
Which card is really better?

If you can splurge for the 7800GT..by all means.. do it.

Either way.. both cards are highly sought after.. perform extremely well, and will not drain your wallet too much.

This is precisely what benchmarks are for. The 7800GT is faster and therefore better, but you'll want to read benchmarks to see if it's worth the extra $. There's an eVGA 6800GS for only $160AR at NewEgg, and I think 7800GTs are around $290.

Here's a recent review to get you started. Check out AnandTech's, too.

Oh, about the 7800GT. Keep in mind the refresh part, the 7900GT, is due in a month or so and is rumored to cost just $300. It might be worth waiting for that if you're considering the 7800GT, as it looks to provide 7800GTX performance at a 7800GT price. If the rumor is correct, that is. I have my doubts, but I'd still wait until the rumored March 9th 7900 launch/announcement.

I would get the 7800GT. I have one, it rocks. I can play Quake 4 with all settings maxed out at 1280x1024 with up to 8x Supersampling AA before I notice a performance drop. Once I get into 16x though, I think you would need something faster for that.

If the price is right, the 7800gt all the way, but if the cost breaks your budget, then the 6800GS is a nice compromise.

Either you're blind, or a liar. I'm leaning towards the latter. Please don't lie to people who are trying to get information to make an informed decision.

*EDIT* To the OP... the 7800GT is faster than the 6800GS in every possible way you can think of.

It really depends on how much you want to spend. The 6800GS is a great card if you don't want to spend a lot of money, and the 7800 GT is a decent mid-high end solution.
