What is better for playing music? Home Theater? Shelf System?

If better = louder to you, know this: all else equal, more power or more speakers = louder.

Keeping power constant, each additional identical speaker adds 3 db.

Keeping the number of speakers constant, each doubling of watts adds 3 db.

in this case, the HT system listed wins (the shelf system is only 540W peak)

I'm not a quality freak.

What I want, is a system that is VERY LOUD. I listen to Heavy Metal and I really love to hear heavy chords and a thick base or drum sound.

I basically have blown 2 Home Theater system from playing very loud music. This would be my 3rd.

I went from a 500W to a 600w and now I went all out with a 1200W.

(yes, I can still hear)

Put away the kid gloves and go pro. :D

Get a few kW's per band (triamp is good to start) and you will have the punch you desire.

Go for Quality anyway. Loud is just loud, quality is where it's at.

The wattage ratings on all those are bogus anyway.

If you want something really loud, get some speakers with high sensitivity. Combine that with some good real wattage and you'll be able to go very loud.

I think this dude just wants speakers that don't compress real easy, like most of the low-end HT/Shelf stuff (or rather, all of it).

I'd check out some pro/PA speakers. I bet you can find some used for a good price.

If you just want loud I wouldn't bother with a 5.1 system. I would get a very powerful amp seperately, and 2 very high wattage speakers.

If you just want loud get a pair of Cerwin Vega floorstanders and an amp/receiver. They're sensitive and can probably be found for around $300 a pair.

how about buy some quality speakers and a receiver then instead of throwing money away on crap.

They would last longer ,sound louder and better.

I can pretty much guarantee that you have measurable hearing loss at this point.

Maybe he should invest in an SPL meter before he hurts himself :(
