I'm about 3-4 months away from a new build and want it to tear up Oblivion when it comes out. Planning on a 7800 as well.

Oblviion is coded for dual core ...so dual-core obviously :)

Also in anands tests dual-core scored on par with an FX 200mhz faster. Now that's with an absolutely minimal OS and no sound (I think) which would offloaded to the other core.

Add in a full loaded OS with bloat and many background processes and than dual-core will be doing even better.

Also, nvidia and others are looking to offload CPU work onto the second core making it faster even for single-core games.

Dual-core is the future so is worth more in the long-term where it has increasing value while the FXs value only decreases comparatively.

In short X2 = the winner.

There's no reason to chose a FX over an X2 - X2 is just plain the better chip regardless and you should want to get it.

You're asking NOW? Theres no telling what will come out in 3-4 months....but stay away from FX, X2 is more future proof, I am thinking of switching to X2 once games using X2 become more mainstream. But ya, right NOW the FX is a superior processor than the X2, but, the X2 is more future proof and in the long run you will like more.

Technically the FX should offer maximum performance for single threaded a pps. However, AT and others predict a definite shift to multithreading in games and traditionally single threaded applications by the end of 2006 or even earlier. At that point EVERY single core system would be left in the dust by a lowly X2 3800+.

I don't think it will get that bad so soon :p

You might be right, but the PS3 and Xbox360 are going to push multithreaded game developement along like nothing else could...

I think it's coming sooner rather than later. Even so, I don't think i'll be hopping on the dual core bandwagon until socket M1 comes around. I'm hoping things will be cheaper by then.

If you're already planning on blowing 1000+ on a processor, it might as well be an X2.

Ya and I don't think the developers will want to lose out on the single core users(which will be the majority for a good while), an X2 in a multithread application will most likely only get a 10-15% gain in performance, if it really destroys single core....there won't be much of sales if the average joe can't run the application at OK performance.
